Peer Ambassador Club

Nelson Mandela High School Peer Ambassador Club will be an extra –curricular club advocating for respect for diversity, harmony among students and staff, addressing human rights issues and promoting the spirit of volunteerism by providing students an opportunity to make a difference in the school and community.

We would like the club to be part of the school culture and to host the Anti-Racism event in commemoration of the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racism and Discrimination. Our club members will be involved with many programs in the school such as Drama, Choir, Dance that entail local school-based as well as community wide initiatives. Such events will be part of the Nelson Mandela High School culture supporting an environment of collaboration to ensure the success of all of our events.

Nelson Mandela High School is a diverse school community with over 30 languages and cultures represented. We are very proud of our diversity and for this reason the school as a whole will support all Peer Ambassadors Club’s initiatives. The club’s slogan is “Together We’re Better” which is the belief that working together makes things better. We work to foster responsible choices and a caring environment. The club will fundraise for many groups and programs locally and internationally. We will support the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank and Free The Children, an international movement helping kids all over the world. In this capacity we are raising funds for women to educate their children. It is amazing how much of a difference an individual can make once we work as a team on common goals.

The Club’s hope is to continue bridging the gap between the school and community, to recognize the complexity that exists in such a diverse environment, and to honour the uniqueness of each individual in this community. Our initiatives require a vision and a team that has a purpose. With that in mind, we are hoping we can access some funding in order to continue providing activities, guests speakers, and valuable experiences to our students, staff and community members. Our school is a high needs school and often we encounter difficulties being able to sponsor a speaker or plan an event due to limited financing and funds available at the school level. The school will be supportive with many of the club’s initiatives and we are hoping by getting access to grants supporting Inclusive Learning Communities, we are able to continue to promote respect for diversity, caring school environment and programs/activities that will continue to inspire good will among its citizens.

Any additional funding that we receive will be used to pay for guest speakers, plan school events, and provide club members with an opportunity to go on a year -end field trip to locations such as Banff National Park, The Legislative Building in Edmonton and possibly even camping.
