Academic Guidelines

The pathway to graduation will require students to be actively involved in the planning process for course selections and credits earned. Your Connect Teacher and staff in the Success Centre are helpful resources as you consider choices in your journey to complete high school and as you prepare for apprenticeships, the world of work and post-secondary education.

In order for students to graduate they must meet the minimum Alberta Education Graduation Requirements for a High School Diploma or the Certificate of Completion for students in the Knowledge and Employability Program. This will also apply for students to be eligible to participate in Mandela’s Graduation Exercises. If you do not qualify at the end for 3 years to earn a high school diploma or certificate of completion, you will also not qualify to participate in graduation exercises.

High School Diploma requirements can be found on the Alberta Education website.

Spares

Spares are valuable opportunities for students to study, research, work on assignments and get extra help. Grade 10’s do not have spares. Grade 11’s will not have a spare unless warranted by their program. Grade 12’s may have a spare each semester if their courses and credits are up to date. Decisions about spares are made in consultation with the student,
their parent, the Success Centre and the appropriate administrator.

While on a spare, students are expected to be working quietly in the designated areas of the Learning Commons, in the Pre-Function Space by the cafeteria, at tables in the Common Space by Sports Med or in the stadium. The flex spaces are reserved for Communities to use during class time and are not available for students on spares.

Students on spares should not be in the halls or acting in ways which interfere with other classes or the normal functioning of a school. Students may also choose to work in the Calgary Public Library at the Genesis Centre.
