Admin Message - October 15, 2021

Dear New Brighton families,
It was another busy week here at NBS. We made it through another school picture day while trying got keep the students looking as picture-perfect as when they arrived at school. It is always tricky when class picture times fall after outdoor recess or lunch especially when it is a windy day. We will have a retake day on November 3rd if you are not happy with the one from this week.
Yesterday was our first pizza lunch of the year and it was another success for those students who participated. This month will be a double Healthy Hunger month as we have decided to have a Kernels Popcorn snack day on October 29th to have it coincide with our Halloween/Pajama Day activities. Popcorn Snack Days are one of the few that our kindergarten students can participate in as well.
Monday, October 18th is a Professional Development Day and the first of what is to be an annual system non-instruction day of professional learning focused on improving academic achievement and well-being for Indigenous students. A design team from School Improvement has been collaborating to plan this full day of professional learning for all CBE staff, focused on “establishing the conditions under which the learning aspirations and the potential of First Nations, Métis and Inuit students will be realized". As a staff, New Brighton School is very excited to begin this learning journey that we will continue throughout the year as we participate in the University of Alberta's Indigenous Canada course.
Single Strand Lanyards
Some students have been using single-strand lanyards to secure their facemasks and prevent their loss or contamination. Although this is a handy item to use single strand lanyards without a safety release mechanism (either velcro or an engineered plastic clip at the back), are a prohibited item in CBE schools as they can present a choking or ligature risk to anyone wearing one. These lanyards can be grabbed by another student or caught on playground equipment resulting in serious injuries.
Students who bring these devices from home are not permitted to use them on CBE property and we are asking parents not to send them with their student(s). Any lanyards with the breakaway release mechanism are permitted.
Staff Parking lot
We would like to thank our dog owners who are walking their dogs to school on a leash and saying their goodbyes from the sidewalk or school ground boundaries. We truly appreciate everyone’s effort in this regard and we have seen a significant improvement now that the word has gotten out.
Now we are hoping we can see the same improvement in our parking lot and student drop-off and pick-up times. We are asking for your help in making New Brighton School a safe place for our students to attend. We continue to experience difficulty with the parking situations around the school. The signage is very clear where parking is permitted and is placed in a manner to allow all our children to walk to school in a safe environment. Our Bus Zone is designed to allow the buses an easy/safe approach and departure from the front of the school.
Our staff parking lot is at its maximum capacity and having parents drop students off in the parking lot is against school board regulations. This is due to the fact it creates a very unsafe situation for our children walking to school who use the sidewalk that crosses over the entrance to the lot. The staff parking lot is for staff only with the only exception being the two handicap spots. We have students who will require access to one of the spots and we currently have 2 students who also access those spots every day.
Calgary Parking Authority continues to be contacted by a number of our neighbours who have had their driveways and garage doors blocked by parents/guardians of students attending our school. We strive to do our best to be good neighbours and as parents/guardians of students at New Brighton School, you are all representatives of our school community. Unfortunately, the actions of a few can reflect on the whole, and we were saddened to hear about the lack of courteousness being offered to our neighbours.
Please read the reminders from The Parking Authority to familiarize yourself with the City of Calgary Parking Bylaws. They state:
Please be courteous and consider the following when dropping off or picking up your children from school.
- Avoid double parking
- Watch for signs indicating ‘No Stopping’ and ‘No Parking’ zones
-  Leave 5 metres (16 feet) between your car and any crosswalk markings. This will ensure children are visible when they enter the crosswalk.
- School bus zones must be kept clear so children can step off the bus and onto a curb instead of exiting into a busy street.
-  Parking too close to stop signs, yield signs or intersections makes it difficult to see children in the area and obstructs the view of other motorists. A distance of 5 metres is required.
-  Blocking entrances to garages or driveways angers neighbours. Stay back at least 1.5 metres (5 feet).
All parking infractions in school zones are subject to a minimum $50 fine.
Please park responsibly and help make streets safe for our children.

Lost and Found
Every Friday in my Admin Message there will be pictures of our lost and found items. If you see an item that belongs to your child please email the school at with the subject Lost and Found. Once we hear from you, the item will be delivered to your child’s classroom. The best way to avoid this is to make sure you label all your child’s belongings.
