Diverse Learning Needs

The CBE provides appropriate programming for students with diverse learning needs in all of our community schools. In some cases, students may be referred to our specialized classes and/or unique school settings to meet their needs. We provide programming at various sites to meet the specialized needs of some students with:

  • Autism Spectrum, Cognitive/Developmental Disabilities, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum
  • Blind and Visually Impaired
  • Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH)
  • Giftedness 
  • Gifted and Talented Education
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Mental Health and Wellness (social/emotional/behavioural challenges) 
  • Physical and Medical Disabilities

Program, Focus & Approach

Our Focus

O. S. Geiger School is a safe, caring and dynamic learning community which ensures rigorous academic learning and opportunities for all students to develop their personal talents and abilities. We encourage students to set and achieve challenging personal goals and to approach life with a “Can Do” attitude. A focus on academic inquiry, citizenship, environmental stewardship and health & wellness are at the heart of our school. The rich diversity of our students is seen as an advantage in the development of capable, self-reliant and responsible learners capable of succeeding in the 21st century global community.

The entire staff at our school remains dedicated to current training and practice to foster and support a safe and caring learning environment where every child meets their potential. In keeping with the vision of the CBE, we work toward the following:

  • Each student, in keeping with his or her individual abilities and gifts, will complete high school with a foundation of
  • learning necessary to thrive in life, work and continued learning
  • Each student will be literate and numerate, able to integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, attitudes and
  • competencies acquired across all academic disciplines
  • Each student be a responsible citizen
  • Each student will identify and actively develop individual gifts, talents and interests 
  • Each student will demonstrate good character 

Homework

Assigning homework is up to the individual teacher. Students and parents are encouraged to set aside a regular time each evening for home study and/or recreational reading. This supports students in developing strong study skills. The nature and amount of home study recommended are as follows.

Division 1 (Grades 1-3): Parents and teachers should encourage children to read, and review math facts each evening. No formal assignments should be made, but 5-10 minutes of reading is encouraged.

Division 2 (Grades 4-5): Formal homework assignments may be given at the discretion of the teacher, particularly for students who need special attention or help, and for long project assignments. Most often this may be within the half-hour range. Reading is encouraged for half of this time.

Students are responsible for the prompt return of any homework assignments. In the event that homework is not returned, the teacher will contact the parent or guardian to discuss the most suitable arrangements for the child to get the forgotten work. Under no circumstances will a child be sent home without the knowledge of the parent.
