Going Green

Environmental Initiatives at Our School

At Peter Lougheed, we believe that students and staff should contribute to taking care of our environment.  Being a new school we have many features that work to help lower Peter Lougheed School's environmental footprint.

Lights

Automatic/motion sensor lights are installed in all classrooms and work spaces.

Waste Reduction Program

We also work with our CBE's Ecoteam, which is a group of dedicated staff who help schools lower their impact on the environment.  At Peter Lougheed, in each learning space, we have three bins for students/staff to make environmentally conscious decisions when discarding materials.  We have BLUE bins for Recyclable Materials (plastics, paper, etc.),  YELLOW for refundables, GREEN for Organics and BLACK for waste.   Our goal is for students to be stewards not only of our school and community, but to create a caring mindset for our planet.

Environmental Studies

At Peter Lougheed, we also have explore courses that focus on Environmental Studies. Students often head down to the Hugh A. Bennett pond, which is the large wetlands area just east of our school, to learn about these vital riparian ecosystems, but they also give back, by cleaning up the shores of our local wetlands right here in the community of Saddleridge!

Our School is LEED Certified

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED) is an evaluation tool and a rating system that is recognized in over 160 countries as the international mark of excellence for green buildings.

Why is LEED important?

  • Green buildings contribute to a healthier indoor environment for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Schools that meet LEED requirements are designed and built with natural daylight, better ventilation and are furnished with materials that enhance indoor air quality.
  • They are engineered to conserve energy, decrease water consumption, minimize indoor noise and create better thermal comfort through increased insulation and improved temperature control.
  • Staff and students who live, learn and work in these buildings have been found to be more productive, higher performing and healthier.

The physical environment where students learn plays an important role in influencing students and helping them prepare to become citizens in a complex and ever-changing world. By meeting the requirements of LEED certification, our newer schools both provide a healthy learning environment and a real life model of sustainable development.

Since 2006, all new CBE schools have been designed and built to a minimum LEED Silver rating. For more information, including a list of all CBE LEED certified schools, visit the Sustainability page on the CBE website. Also visit the Canada Green Building Council website.
