After High School

Planning is about finding the route that supports you, your goals and interests.

Post-Secondary Admissions

Why apply early?

  • You receive a student number allowing you to apply for residence.
  • You have an increased focus on your post-secondary plans.
  • You remove the pressure of meeting later deadlines.

When can you start applying?

  • This can be different at every post-secondary.
    • University of Lethbridge is Sep. 1
    • University of Calgary is Oct. 1
    • SAIT is Oct. 3
  • Always check the post-secondary website for current information.
  • When the admission cycle ends will be different for each post- secondary.

General Application Process

  • For post-secondaries within Alberta: www.applyalberta.ca
  • For post-secondaries within Ontario: www.ouac.om.ca
  • You will need your Alberta Education Number which is found on all your report cards. It is not your CBE ID number.
  • For other institutions, you may apply through their website.
  • Other Great Resources:
  • Self-reporting grade 12 courses and grades can be the norm for some post-secondaries ….except the U of C for 2019- 2020 school year.
  • All post-secondaries will request a final official transcript to be sent from Alberta Education to them before the deadline, which is usually Aug. 1
  • Indicate faculty and program you wish to pursue. Many are competitive.
  • Many institutions will allow you to select a first and second choice.
  • You can submit applications to several institutions.
  • Application fees can range between $75.00 and $300.00 per institution.
  • You should receive some acknowledgement of receipt of your application. Read it carefully as it will tell you what to do next.
  • Some post-secondaries require separate application for Entrance Scholarships. Some do not, as it is automatic.
  • Don’t forget to submit an application for residence. Some post- secondaries guarantee residence for first year students, some do not.
  • After receipt of conditional/early admission, you will register for classes in the spring. You may be required to pay a fee to hold your spot.

What Courses Do Post-Secondaries Accept?

  • Again, each Post-Secondary and faculty can be different. Always check websites
  • For universities, they require English 30-1 and four other courses.
  • Nursing at U of C: English 30-1, Math 30-1 or Math 30-2, Biology 30, Chemistry 30, and one other approved course or option.
  • Nursing at MRU: English 30-1, Math 30-1 or Math 30-2, Biology 30, one of Chemistry 30 or Physics 30 or Science 30, and one other approved course or option.
  • Some faculties are more restrictive: Engineering: English 30-1, Math 30-1, Math 31, Chemistry 30, and Physics 30.
  • For a Polytechnic (S.A.I.T.) or college, they may require English 30-1 or 30-2 depending on the program. Again, many programs are competitive.
  • U of C does accept science 30 as an approved course
  • On Sep. 26 at the lunch hour meeting, U of A stated they do not take WK EXP 35

International/ELL Students

If you are in English Language Learner (ELL) it means English is not your first language

We will support you to:

  • determine your English language abilities based on a language assessment
  • build a personalized course plan
  • take English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to help you be successful and earn high school credits
  • You may/will need to write a TOEFL or IELTS test for Post – Secondary. The scores needed will vary depending on the institution. Calgary Test Centre locations and practice tests are on the web.

Students on an IPP (Individual Program Plan)

  • While in high school, use your accommodations. If not, the post-secondary may not allow you to use them
  • Register with the Post- Secondary’s Accessibility Services department as soon as you receive your early/conditional acceptance
  • Provide documentation of required accommodations
  • Meet with an Access Advisor
  • Remember…self-advocacy is the best
