Even though most of our schools offer a regular program, no two are quite the same. All schools teach according to Alberta Education’s mandated curriculum, however a school’s focus, optional courses and school activities are as unique as every school.​​​

Homeroom Structure

One of the strengths of Queen Elizabeth High School (QEHS) is the prioritization of building a strong sense of community, across all grades (7-12).  This includes a grades 7-12 homeroom structure with students remaining in the same homeroom with the same teacher over the course of their time at QEHS.  All grades consist of: community program students, Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH), and Knowledge and Employability (K&E) students. We have many leadership opportunities for students including clubs and classes at both the Junior and Senior High levels. We welcome opportunities for student (and family) voice and choice.   Staff work intentionally to foster a whole-school inclusive atmosphere that is welcoming, safe, caring, and respectful. 

International Students

Queen Elizabeth High School is proud to welcome students from around the world into our international student program. We offer a wide range of academic courses and specialized services, including ELL programming for all levels. Our teachers are highly trained and experienced and our standards of academic excellence are among the highest in the world. Our goal is to ensure our students have a valuable academic and cultural experience and we work hard to ensure the school placement matches each student’s interests and abilities.

ELL (English Language Learners)

Approximately 25% of students in the Calgary Board of Education are English Language Learners in the process of acquiring English as an additional language. English Language Learners’ language and academic development at Queen Elizabeth High School is supported through a wide range of programming options and personalized instructional strategies. These depend on students’ backgrounds, grade levels, and language proficiency levels. 

Transitions

Queen Elizabeth High School is both pleased and proud to house the junior and senior high transitions program that supports students with complex needs. This is intended as a short-term program designed to have students be successful in school. Many types of supports are available based on the individual needs of each student. Program staff includes the classroom teacher, a behaviour support worker, educational child and youth care workers and other professionals based on student need. This is a joint program with the Calgary Board of Education, Alberta Health Services, Hull Services, and Woods Homes.


High School Redesign (Alberta Education)

High School Redesign is a province-wide initiative focused on three outcomes: engaged students, high levels of achievement and quality teaching. It's about redesigning high school to be more student-centred and responsive.  The shift in mindset to a focus on student-centered learning happens as a number of key practices are put in place, including: personalizing learning, developing meaningful relationships, and creating rigorous and relevant learning opportunities; and supporting mastery learning.

​​​​Off-Campus Education

Connecting what students learn in school with the real world in a variety of ways, including job-shadowing, volunteering and paid positions. It helps prepare students for the workplace through hands-on experiences. These opportunities are offered to all high school students.

​​Middle Years at the CBE

Middle years learning refers to education offered to students between the ages of 10-15. These years are critical in keeping our students on the path to high school completion and their career futures. Keys for student success include: participating in hands-on, purposeful and relevant learning; creating positive relationships with peers, teachers and other adults; and being actively involved in the community and feeling supported by family, businesses and other organizations that surround them.

​​​​Exploring Career Choices

For Grades 5 to 9 at the CBE, we offer Career & Technology Foundations (CTF). This is an inquiry-based, hands-on program that focuses on essential skills common to occupational areas, and our students personalize their learning based on their interests and passions.​​​

​​​​Dual Credit at the CBE

As a CBE student, you may choose to take a dual credit program as part of your high school learning plan. Dual credit programs allow you to:

  • Study in an area of passion and interest
  • Get a jump start on post-secondary learning.
  • Earn high school and post-secondary credits (transferable).
  • Build confidence and develop skills that will support a successful post-secondary transition.
  • Experience a post-secondary learning environment and learn about ongoing opportunities.
  • Reduce first-year course load and the time required to complete a program.

As a dual credit student, you would be concurrently enrolled in both a post-secondary institution and your high school​. You would earn credits towards both a high school diploma and a post-secondary degree or diploma.

​​​​​​Exploring Career Choices

Career and Technology education provides CBE students with dynamic, personalized learning opportunities that​ support them to transition into education, training and work. It is a part of the Alberta Programs of Study and is offered in every school, every day and for every student.

 Career and Technology Studies (CTS) is a complementary program for high school students. Students develop career and technology-related skills while enhancing employability competencies. Here is an overview of CTS pathways and Knowledge and Employability (K&E) Occupational Courses and information on specialized facilities.

 

Career & Technology Centre at Lord Shaughnessy High School

The Career & Technology Centre (CTC) is a hub for CTS learning for students registered in CBE high schools across Calgary. Students who attend the CTC will take courses at their designated high schools. Still, they will also access the CTC to enhance their learning through credentialed, dual credit or pre-placement programs for specific periods.
