Learning Commons at the CBE

Today’s learners cannot imagine life without the internet and supporting technology. The concept of the traditional library is changing to include technology, online tools and spaces for collaboration and exploration.

Learning Commons / Library

The Learning Commons is centrally located in the school and is a place of active learning.  It is a space that encourages critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, risk taking, and creativity. Books, digital resources, and physical materials may be used in the learning process. We are working to develop this area of the school and will be seeking input from our community as we continue this process.

Borrowing Books and Other Media

Children are permitted to go to the Learning Commons to exchange materials whenever they have permission from their classroom teacher. Materials are due one week from the day they are borrowed. They can be renewed if necessary. There is a charge for lost and damaged items. Damage includes drawings, underlining, highlighting, ripping, pet chewing, water damage, and irreparable food spills. Damage does not include regular wear and tear.

  • Hardcover Replacement cost of book
  • Paperback Replacement cost of book

Tip: establish a spot in your home away from possible damage where all borrowed materials must stay when not being
used.

Please note the following limits for borrowed materials:

  • Kindergarten – One or two items
  • Grade 1: Two items
  • Grade 2: Two items
  • Grades 3 – 6: Three items or more as determined by the teachers, library assistant, with parent input.

Students have access to various forms of technology as needed to support their learning.  Students are expected to be responsible digital citizens at all times when using technology.
