Band Program Expectations
*Please note! Due to COVID related procedures and guideline our SWS Band Program will not be running as usual. Information and updates will be shared with student and families as classes resume.
Thank you for your understanding.
Welcome to the Samuel W. Shaw School Band program! Band is a fun, challenging, and rewarding experience for students looking to learn how to play an instrument, spend time with friends, and work together as a group to create music. To help our program be successful, we have some expectations.
Our blog is swsmusicblog.com. This blog has everything! Instrument selection, band information, forms, the handbook, schedules and concert dates. Please subscribe to the blog to get the most up-to-date information on the band for the whole year.
SWS is fortunate enough to have a large supply of instruments. Instrument selection can be done on our blog. Students pay a rental fee for the year and return their instrument at the end of the year. If the school does not have any more of the instrument your child plays or you would like to purchase an instrument, instruments can also be rented or purchased through Long and McQuade or St. John’s Music.
Students in grades 6-9 bands wear an SWS Music band shirt, black pants/skirts, black socks/nylons and black shoes. Band shirts are available for purchase through the band program. Students are expected to provide their own black pants/skirts/shoes etc. The music parent committee has begun to organize and sell used black bottoms, shoes, and music shirts to help parents keep up with their growing children.
Students are strongly encouraged to practice their instrument at home at least four times per week. The band sounds amazing when the students all practice and put in their best effort. Class time has to be spent working with the whole band as much as possible. Students have a responsibility to learn their parts at home as much as they can so that they come to class prepared to put their part together with the whole band.
Attendance at all classes, rehearsals, performances and concerts is mandatory. Concerts require many hours, weeks, and months of hard work and preparation from the students and from those organizing the concerts. Concerts are an exciting and fun performance opportunity for students and their families. It can be very disappointing for students when key instruments are missing and their hard work does not go as planned. We sound our best when everyone is there! Please let the band director know if your child will be absent due to illness, medical appointments, family emergencies, etc. We know that sometimes conflicts arise because students are involved in other extra-curricular activities. Please contact the band director to try to work out a compromise.
Early Morning Rehearsals
The students in grades 7-9 have an extra mandatory band practice one a week in the mornings:
Gr 8/9 – Thursday mornings from 8:00-8:45am, from October-June
Gr 7 – Tuesday mornings from 8:00-8:45am, from February -June
Please be prompt so that we can get as much rehearsal in as possible! If a rehearsal needs to be cancelled due to extreme weather, teacher illness etc., we will send out an email and post it on the blog. If a student comes to school and morning band has been cancelled they are allowed to stay in the office until 8:45. They can also call home if needed.
Music Parents Committee
Our music parent committee supports music programs through fundraising, volunteering, and in many other ways. Please consider giving some time to helping out with the music program. Your work is greatly needed and enormously appreciated! Please contact Karla Smith, band director, if you would like to get involved.
