International Spanish Academy
¿Quiénes somos? Our school is an International
Spanish Academy! The International Spanish Academy program is an educational
initiative of the Ministry of Education of Spain that complements the Calgary
Board of Education's vibrant Spanish Bilingual Program by connecting schools
from across Alberta and the United States. It provides students with
opportunities to acquire and maintain language skills in Spanish and English and
develop global citizenship through rich intercultural encounters.
All students enrolled in the English Regular Program access the Alberta Education six-year Spanish Language and Culture program of studies. Families interested in having their junior high aged-children begin to receive basic level Spanish classes are welcome to inquire about attending Senator Patrick Burns as an out-of-area student on the grounds of access to specialized programming.
Physical, Emotional and Mental Health
A priority is placed on the development of healthy lifestyles and practices. On Friday mornings, you will participate in Bronco Block together with your homeroom class and teacher. This is a time in which curricular outcomes for the Alberta Comprehensive School Health Program will be explored, with the support of the physical education teaching team, and various community resources (Social Media Safety, WiseGuyz, Grade 6 Girls Program, etc.). A focus will be placed on building strong relationships, organizing your materials for learning, and managing weekly school assignments and deadlines.
Student Learning Team (SLT)
Our school has a qualified Student Learning Team, comprised of the administrative team, a school-based psychologist, a school health nurse, a resource teacher, classroom teachers, and educational assistants to accommodate students’ personal learning profiles. The SLT meets on a weekly basis to discuss students of concern and create personalized strategies for learning. Emotional / social support is available for you if you need it by making an appointment in the main office.
Active Living and Fresh Air
All students are provided with a daily Physical Education class, from a qualified P.E. on teacher. We offer a wide selection of after school athletic team sports (cross country, soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton, track and field and triathlon) that are designed to develop skill, promote school pride and reduce stress. Intramural sports are planned over the lunch hours for multi-grade games and fun.
