January 2020- Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Budget Updates:

I have received our finalized budget for the 2019/2020 school year for SVS. After reviewing our budgetary allocations, I have identified for layoffs, three Educational Assistants, two Lunchroom Supervisor positions and reduced the Library Assistant position weekly hours. I would like to thank Ms. Petersen, Ms. Stenbeck, Ms. Leung, Ms. O’Brien and Ms. James for their dedication and ethic of care that they have extended to countless students at SVS over the last four years. Their skill sets will be missed greatly by the students, families and staff at SVS.

In addition to these support staff positions, I have terminated early a 1.0 full time temporary teaching position prior to April 7th initial end date within our grade one team. Administration is working on scenarios involving redeployment and reorganization of remaining staff to meet the instructional gaps created by this shift. Affected students/ families will be contacted in the event of changes in classroom assignments or teacher redeployment well in advance of the February 3, 2020 end date.

SVS office staff will also be impacted as of February 3, 2020. With a reduction in hours, I am asking parents to inform the office no later than 3:00 pm if students will not be taking the bus or need to wait at the office area for appointments at dismissal. Of course, we understand and will take calls for unexpected circumstances. After 3:30, we will not have personnel free to take last minute parent calls as bussing and ensuring students are accounted for will be prioritized.

Program enhancements that have a direct budgetary cost to the school in the form of fee subsidies will result in the cancellation of the school wide ski program, swimming, and outdoor school for the 2019/2020 school year. We will be working with staff, council and students to explore alternate sources and funds for these enhancements for the upcoming 2020/2021 school year.
