Retirement Announcement

Dear Somerset School Families and Students,

It is with mixed emotions that I am writing to inform you that after thirty one years of teaching in eight different Calgary Board of Education schools as a teacher, Vice Principal, Assistant Principal and the Principal of Somerset School for the past eleven years, I have decided to retire effective June 30, at the end of this school year. It is time for new adventures, a new chapter in my life and to having more time with family and friends.

It has been an amazing journey of learning and growing as a person and an educator alongside so many students, their families and staff which I will be forever grateful for.

I would like to personally thank you and express my gratitude for your support during my time at Somerset School for working with us for your child’s learning and well-being. It has been an honour and a privilege to be a part of a community that has been so supportive, engaged and caring. A special thank you to the many parents and guardians who have served on School Council, the Friends of Somerset School Foundation and many volunteers who have played an integral role in enhancing the students learning experience, well-being and sense of belonging with our community.

To support the transition to a new Principal the position will be posted in the near future. The goal is to have the new Principal in place before the end of this school year to assist in the transition and planning for the 21-22 school year. We are fortunate to have time to work together for a smooth transition.

The Calgary Board of Education welcomes input from parents, students and staff regarding the programming and leadership attributes you value. A input survey link has been provided to our Somerset School community via school messenger on May 21 and will be open until June 1. The input will be shared with the new principal for Somerset School to inform their entry plan into the school.

With our strong team at Somerset School we look forward to a positive last part of the school year and a successful transition supporting the new Principal to prepare for 21-22.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement working with us for student learning and well-being.

We are excited to welcome our students back to school on Tuesday, May 25!

Sincere regards,

Jim Gibb, Principal
