​Regular Program at the CBE

Even though most of our schools offer a regular program, no two are quite the same. All schools teach according to Alberta Education’s mandated curriculum, however a school’s focus, optional courses and school activities are as unique as every school.​​​

Program, Focus & Approach

While it may look different in every classroom, the basic premise behind personalized learning is the same. It begins with engaging students in an active way. When students are truly engaged in learning, they actively apply higher order thinking skills to solve problems, to create new knowledge, and to ask new questions. It is a guided and intentional practice firmly based in research that demonstrates the benefits when students are actively engaged in their own learning.

A Circle of Courage and Stay Smart, Stay Safe School

Somerset School is a vibrant, caring and compassionate place to learn. All stakeholders are valued as significant and meaningful contributors to our learning community. We are connected by a shared student-centered vision around the philosophy of the “Circle of Courage” and the “Start Smart Stay Safe” School program with the support of the Calgary Police Services. The overarching values encompass our school‟s Vision, Mission & Purpose. These values are congruent with and aligned to Alberta Education and CBE Results Statements.

There are four overarching values embodied in the model of positive youth development. The central premise of this model is that a set of shared values must be the foundation of a community of learners. Those shared values include belonging, generosity, independence and mastery. We see all students from a strength based perspective, we promote resiliency, nurture a sense of belonging for all students and we are committed to a safe and caring environment for everyone. 

Homework Guidance

The CBE makes recommendations about homework in Policy and Administrative Regulation 3066 – Homework

The recommendation is in Grades 1 – 3, no more than 10 minutes is required and Grade 4, no more than 20 minutes. This is a time for home reading or the completion of assignments at the higher grades. Assigning homework is up to the individual teacher – please communicate directly with them with any questions, concerns or needs for more support. 

Students and parents are encouraged to set aside some regular time each evening for home study or recreational reading. We also have online resources to support home learning. Please note that there is no expectation that teachers will prepare homework for students that are absent due to a family holiday.
