Principal's Message

Principal Year End Message

Another school year has come to a close and what an unusual ending it has been.  We know our teachers planned farewell Google Meets this week to say good-bye to their students. We hope you were able to join us as a last farewell to teachers and staff during our farewell wave parade.  On behalf of the staff of Sundance School, we wish our grade 6 students a farewell as they “move camp” from their elementary school days to Junior High.  Our students continuing in French Immersion will move on to David Thompson and we have others who have chosen alternate schools. We would also like to wish students in kindergarten – grade 5 who are leaving Sundance all the best at their new school whether it be here in Calgary or another city.
Report Cards
On Friday, June 26, report cards become available through My CBE/PowerSchool portal at 12:00 pm. Once logged in, you will see an additional tab titled “Report Card”. Select this tab to view the report card.
We are proud of the accomplishments of all of our students and wish them the best moving onto to a new school year! Report cards will be visible through end-July, and then access will be turned off in preparation for the new school year. Appeals Day is from 8:00AM - 12:00 pm by e-mail to the homeroom teacher on Monday June 29.  For our ELL learners, please see the link to view the Reporting English Language Learning Proficiency document: ELL Language Proficiency

Please see the link to the CBE re-entry plan: Planning for school re-entry
Please ensure that our school has your correct email address and you are subscribed to receive any updates regarding re-entry in September. We are all hopeful about the future and await anxiously for the government’s announcement on August 1.

Transportation pre-registration deadline extended

Due to the impact of COVID-19 on our system and families, the transportation pre-registration deadline has been extended to June 30, 2020. This year, routes will not be publicly posted on websites as adhering to COVID-19 guidelines means transportation department will assign each student to a bus and a bus stop.
Reasons to pre-register:
If families do not pre-register for transportation service prior to the end of June, their address will not be included as bus routes are planned out, meaning NO transportation will be available. ONLY registered students will receive stop information for their primary address.  It may take several weeks to add a student to a route in the fall, and congregated stop locations are only reviewed once per year. As a result, your stop location may be much further away from your home, as your address was not included in the route planning
The use of a ZPass ridership card is mandatory to assist in contact tracing, and only registered riders are provided a ZPass ridership card.  If you have lost your ZPass from this year, you may request a replacement card through your PowerSchool Parent Account once registered
There is no requirement to pay at the time of registration, and there is no financial penalty if you register for bus service and cancel before the deadline of September 30, 2020.
Staffing Updates
The hardest part of this time of year is the many goodbyes as staff members move on to new opportunities. While it is sad to say farewell – we know that there are amazing adventures on the horizon for all of our amazing staff.
We would like to say goodbye and a sincere thank you to the following staff members for their hard work at Sundance School.  They have inspired and supported our students over the years and will be greatly missed. Their impact on staff and students will be the legacy they leave behind.
Firstly, we would like to thank Mme Sylvie Myers and her commitment to support our grade 3 and grade 5 teachers and students. We wish her all the best as she continues to work as a teacher for CBE.  Maybe we will see her back in our halls and classrooms next year at Sundance School.
We would also like to thank Mme Claire Gendron and her commitment to support our grade 4 teachers and students. We wish her all the best as she continues to work as a teacher for CBE.  Maybe we will see her back in our halls and classrooms next year at Sundance School too.
We also say thank you and farewell to our beloved Mme Mélanie Michaud.  Since arriving at Sundance, she has taught grade 4 and 5, supporting teaching and learning at Sundance. She is on to a new adventure, leaving Calgary and heading east to New Brunswick. We will miss her creativity, her kindness and commitment to the students dearly.
Our school assistant, Ms. Kim Bender-Finan is off to Victoria on a new adventure.  We will miss seeing Mme Kim’s friendly greetings at the busses, in the lunchroom and in the hallways.  Hope to see you soon back at Sundance.

Grade Configurations:
We are expecting to have the following grade configurations and teacher supports for the 2020-21 school year:
·         3 Full Day Kindergarten classes
o   2 Mon/Wed/Friday classes.  Classes A and C
o   1 Tues/Thurs/Friday class.   Class B
·         4 Grade 1 classes
·         3 Grade 2 classes
·         2 Grade 3 classes
·         2 Grade 4 classes
·         3 Grade 5 classes
·         2 Grade 6 classes
·         1  Music teacher
These configurations are based on our best estimates for the number of students we expect in each grade. As with any year our student population may change come fall. If numbers shift up or down at any grade we may have to re-organize in the fall. Please note class lists will be shared at the end of August and our first day back will be on Tuesday, September 1, 2020.
You will receive an email in August with instructions of what the September start up will look like once we hear what scenario we will be following based on Alberta Education and CBE guidelines.
If your child is taking the bus, we will have staff available to help direct students to their line-ups.  Many staff will be out on Supervision on Tuesday, September 1, so should you have any questions or problems finding your child’s teacher please ask!
Watch our website for updates in August.
Lastly, we would like to say a HUGE thank you to our School Council and our wonderful parent volunteers this year. We held many successful events this year and the impact clearly made a difference for our students and staff! From our school wide events, welcome back stampede breakfast, Halloween Dance, winter concert, providing delicious suppers for the staff during the parent-teacher conferences among many others, to classroom support such as field trips, presentations and behind the scenes work for those who can’t make it into the school.  We appreciate all that you do to support our students so they have memories to cherish for a lifetime of fun and learning experiences, which they will carry forward with them for years to come!  A special thank you to our Sundance School Council Volunteer Coordinator, Abra G, who is leaving Sundance this year as her kiddos move on to Junior High.  We will miss you tremendously and know that you are leaving Sundance in great hands. Stephanie L will continue on the committee and we welcome Nikki C. who is joining the team of volunteer coordinators.
