WINTER UPDATES 2022

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Once again we find ourselves with the winter break upon us.  As the weather continues to fluctuate, please be reminded that when the temperature (with wind chill) exceeds -20 degrees, students are asked to come into the school before 8:15 AM for safety.  These same conditions apply to our students staying in for lunch, they do not go outdoors if these conditions go below –20 degrees.  Please check our school website for the weather conditions used to base these conditions and considerations at the school.

Our school development plan spans three years time and 2022-2023 is Year Three of this plan. To that end, our 2022-23 goals intentionally
continue from last year:

· Literacy Goals

¨ Student achievement in making personal connections to      reading in order to explore, construct, and extend understanding will improve.

· Well Being for Learning Goal

¨ Student independence in social problem solving, by
demonstrating citizenship, collaboration and problem solving strategies, will improve.

· Mathematics Goal

¨ Student independence in social problem solving, by
demonstrating citizenship, collaboration and problem solving strategies, will improve.

A detailed copy of our 2022-23 School Development Plan that includes student goals, instructional actions, resources, key outcomes and measures is posted on our school webpage at cbe.ab.ca/b398 under the About Us > Our School tab.

 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

As you are aware, our crosswalks at our school are very busy at our start and dismissal times. In a Kindergarten to Grade 4 school,  we do not have the Grade 6 school patrols. With the high volume of traffic and more than 700 students, we would like to have 2 adult supervisors at each of our East and West crosswalks. Our SPECIAL REQUEST is to ask if we have any parents who are interested in Volunteering for Crosswalk Supervision BEFORE and AFTER school.

Training will be provided.

Please contact the Office (403-777-6270) if you are interested to volunteer.

NOTE:
FOR THE PARENTS AND GUARDIANS WHO HAVE ALREADY SIGNED UP TO
VOLUNTEER, WE THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND APPRECIATE YOUR HELP AND
SUPPORT TO OUR SCHOOL AND THE TARADALE COMMUNITY.

Originally, our school's projection was 680 students, currently we have 716 enrolled and we are continuously receiving more registration applications. We will continue to monitor our numbers.

If there is any re-organization for learning required, those families involved will be notified.
All decisions are based on the learning needs of
the students.

WINTER UPDATE 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our school development plan spans three years time and 2021-2022 is Year 2 of this plan. To that end, our 2021-22 goals intentionally continue from last year, with the exception of the Mathematics goal (new in 2021-22).

  *Literacy Goals 2021-22 |

*Student achievement in making personal connections to reading in order to explore, construct, and extend understanding will improve.

*Well Being for Learning Goal 2021-22 |

*Student independence in social problem solving, by
demonstrating citizenship, collaboration and problem solving strategies, will improve.

  *Mathematics Goal 2021-22 new |

*Student independence in social problem solving, by
demonstrating citizenship, collaboration and problem solving strategies, will improve.

A detailed copy of our 2021-22 School Development Plan that includes student goals, instructional actions, resources, key outcomes and measures is posted on our school webpage at cbe.ab.ca/b398 under the About Us > Our School tab.

Learning is energizing. The adults are learning as a collective endeavor during the scheduled early dismissal and professional days. In order to better serve students with their learning

Early Dismissmal Days:  Every Friday early dismissal afternoon begins with a staff meeting for all teachers and support staff. This is an excellent opportunity for the whole staff to all meet together in creating hopes and dreams for Taradale School and in developing goals for the school year. The rest of the afternoons are dedicated to professional learning, system work and professional learning communities.

Professional Days : The support for Friday Early Dismissals continues to be appreciated. The time to meet, work and dream together with the whole staff is invaluable. Teachers also meet in Professional Learning Communities, on Friday afternoons, to create student learning goals and to focus on inquiry related to the School Development Goal. We continue to thank  our Taradale community for adjusting your schedules to accommodate Friday early dismissals.

Thank you to everyone for participating in our VIRTUAL PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES.

It was a pleasure to meet with your families, in your homes, while celebrating your children's learning. We are grateful for everyone's willingness as we learn new ways of facilitating our process, during this unsettled time.

Student Enrollment : Currently we have 686 enrolled and we are continuously receiving more registration applications. We will continue to monitor our numbers.  If there is any re-organization for learning required, those families involved will be notified.  All decisions are based on the learning needs of the students.

Parent Account : Thank you to our parents who have created their “MyCBE/PowerSchool" accounts. This process gives parents the opportunity to book their parents/teacher meetings. Student report cards, school fees, and
other school communication will be delivered through this online method. If you haven't created your parent account, please go to this link for the step-by-step procedure:
                 https://cbe.ab.ca/support/Pages/MYCBE-PowerSchool-Creating-Account.aspx

Students Arrival : Students come to learn. Most of the students arrive on time, prepared to learn. We are appreciative of that. When students arrive, their learning begins and the engagement process takes place. This affords the student the best learning experience. Sadly, we continue to notice how many  students are missing out on learning by arriving late. When a student comes late, they not only interrupt their own learning, but the learning of 20 other students when they enter the class to settle in for the day's learning. Please consider the importance of late arrivals on your child's learning as well as the learning of others. Having our students arrive on time, ready to learn will allow them to receive instructions to begin their learning day together and be a part of a successful day of achievement.

School Council

Our School Council Meetings are held virtually. Topics covered in November were:

*Three-Year Education Plan                   *Calendar
*School Development Plan                     *Professional Learning
*Annual Report for Parents                     *Nominations
*Remembrance Day Ceremony               *Elections

We would like to welcome all of our parents/guardians to our next school council meeting on Tuesday, December 14 at 6:15—virtually.

Please watch for upcoming meeting dates for School Council; information will be updated on our school website.

Winter Celebration
Our Winter Celebration will look different this year, as we create new plans, during this unsettled time.

We will create a week of spirit and JOY with our students during the last week, as they participate in:

· Two assemblies (Tuesday and Thursday), celebrating learning and singing songs;

· Red and Green/Festive Sweater Day—Tuesday;

· Cozy/Comfy Day—Thursday

· Please watch for another notice coming soon about Winter Celebration

…..and it is my greatest pleasure,

and from the bottom of our hearts,

to send PEACE and JOY to all our Taradale Families.

Learning Commons News

The Learning Commons looks slightly different this year for our staff and students. CBE has posted specific protocols for the Learning Commons and resources in the 2020/2021 re-entry guidelines. Based on these guidelines the Learning Commons is not available for students to come in and browse for books. We have created a plan and schedule which follows the guidelines, but still gets the books into our students hands. Essentially instead of the students coming in to find books, the books are now being sent to the classrooms. Each

class receives a bin of library books for the students to choose from. These books remain at school and are not shared amongst the students. At the end of each week the books are collected and quarantined for three days before being redistributed.

Lunch Room Reminders

Now that the weather is getting colder and the snow is upon us, please ensure your child is dressed to go outside during the lunch period. All students benefit from having a hat, mitts, scarf, snow pants, boots and a warm jacket.

Within the health curriculum the students learn about healthy eating. Having a lunch filled with fruits, vegetables, sandwiches and other healthy foods will ensure your child is able to focus on his/her studies for the afternoon classes. Please assist us with educating the students with regards to healthy eating by providing a well-balanced lunch. Please limit candy and other sugar filled snacks.

Wishing you Peace and Joy

Principal’s Message

“Listen with your Heart”

Each year, at Taradale School, we start with a special picture book that we bring to life, throughout the year, in our 30 classrooms.

This school year, 2020-2021, we started with the book, LISTEN

By
Holly M. McGhee

“And when your heart hears your own story, it hears my story too. Your story, my story, our story...,”

which is the message we are sharing with our Kindergarten to Grade Four students

October/November 2020

Our first two months have already been packed full of celebrations. Please ask your children, each day, to share their celebrations with you.

I am honored to begin my fifteenth year as the Principal of our Taradale community, which has created a respectful tone of valuing education and appreciating the opportunity to learn. It is a privilege to be working with our Taradale families. I feel very fortunate.

As a school community, we look forward to continuing to frame our work this year with the Calgary Board of Education Mission, Results and Values:

Mission - Each student, in keeping with his or her individual abilities and gifts, will complete high school with a foundation of learning necessary to thrive in life, work and continued learning.

Results - Academic Success Citizenship Personal Development Character

Values - Students come first. Learning is our central purpose. Public education serves the common good.

We are very pleased to welcome all of our families to Taradale School.

The Calgary Board of Education sent a letter home to our parents on September 15, 2009 stating, “....due to continued enrollment growth at Taradale School, the school is at capacity and will continue to be capped.”

The designated overflow bus receiver school for kindergarten to grade four students residing inside Taradale School’s attendance area is Guy Weadick School, which is located the community of Temple at 5612 Templehill Road NE. You can contact the school at (403) 777-6740.

At this time, most new kindergarten to grade four students moving into Taradale School’s attendance area are designated to Guy Weadick School.

Every Friday early dismissal afternoon will begin with a staff meeting for all teachers and support staff. This is an excellent opportunity for the whole staff to all meet together in creating hopes and dreams for Taradale School. The rest of the afternoons are dedicated to professional learning, system work and professional learning communities.

Medical Alert Snacks and Lunches

We would like to thank all of our Taradale parents for providing their children with healthy, nutritious snacks and lunches on a daily basis. Parents are reminded to discuss with their children the importance of only eating their own snacks and lunches to prevent the sharing of food. We have students in our schoolhouse who have severe allergies to peanuts, cashews and other food sources which if eaten could create a medical difficulty. Please minimize the amount of peanut products in your child’s snacks and lunches.

Working together to teach our students to eat only their own food and not sharing, as well as to be aware and sensitive to each other’s allergies, is key in maintaining a safe environment for all of our Taradale students.

Medical Conditions and Medication

A medical form was sent to parents asking to inform the school if their child has a medical condition or problem. It is important that we be made aware of medical issues and the procedures to follow in case of an emergency. This information should be updated at the beginning of the school year and at any time throughout the year, should there be changes to the condition or procedures. It is important to provide this information to the school office and discuss it with the child’s teacher at conferences or simply by booking an appointment with the teacher.

Some children take medication during the school day. To protect the safety of all of our students and to ensure the security of the medications, all medications must be stored at the school office with instructions for administration. An authorization form for the administration of medication must be completed and signed by the principal before medication will be administered at school. Please request a form from the Office.

Remembrance Day Ceremony

Taradale School shall not forget.....

Our Remembrance Day Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, November 10th, at 10:00 a.m. This is an opportunity for us to come together as a community to remind ourselves of the value of peace in our world. Peace is the result of many minds and hearts working together to create a sense of harmony and to develop a way of living with common purpose and care for each other.

At Taradale School, much of what we do as a school is in direct relationship to the four components of The Circle of Courage. Our ceremony will encompass belonging, independence, mastery and generosity. The Circle of Courage is directly related to the dedication towards the men and women who worked for a peaceful Canada, and ultimately a better future that we all enjoy.

This year, our ceremony will be a virtual gathering, streamed live to each classroom. Students and teachers will enjoy quiet moments of reflection as our school community joins together to remember the past, look toward the future, and live the present together in hopes of peace in our world.

We hope you had an opportunity to view our Taradale Treasure video, from all of us to all of you.  We wanted to reach out and send a very special closing to our school year.

We hope our video will lift your spirits.

We are also filling our Taradale school windows with hearts, sending our TLC to you.

Our hearts will be displayed all summer long, so you know we are thinking about you.

Together we are Taradale Strong.

On behalf of everyone at Taradale School, we want to thank you for supporting us as we created and transitioned to Ongoing Learning at home.  It has been quite an amazing journey.

Our students learned.

Our parents learned.

Our teachers learned.

It is time to pause …… and celebrate JOY.

You will find JOY in the most unusual places and you bring JOY to others, just by being you.

Please continue to check the CBE website, during the summer, for updated information.  Visit www.cbe.ab.ca

Again, from the bottom of our hearts, we continue to send our very special care to you and your families.

Values - Students come first.  Learning is our central purpose.  Public education serves the common good.

We are very pleased to welcome all of our families to Taradale School.

The Calgary Board of Education sent a letter home to our parents on September 15, 2009 stating, “….due to continued enrollment growth at Taradale School, the school is at capacity and will continue to be capped.”

The designated overflow bus receiver school for kindergarten to grade four students residing inside Taradale School’s attendance area is Guy Weadick School, which is located the community of Temple at 5612 Templehill Road NE.  You can contact the school at (403) 777-6740.

All new kindergarten to grade four students moving into Taradale School’s attendance area are designated to Guy Weadick School.

Wow!  Wow! Wow! – Over 95% Attendance

Parent Teacher Conferences

It was an absolute pleasure to meet with approximately 95% of our parents at our Parent/Teacher Conferences in September.  We were thrilled with the outstanding participation in attending conferences, as well as booking conferences online! During the next couple of weeks, we encourage the parents, who were not able to attend conferences, to contact teachers and schedule an opportunity to meet their child’s teacher and to participate in their first conference.

We can feel the strong sense of community at Taradale.

I continue to be the Proud, Proud, Proud Principal of Taradale School.  What do we treasure?  We treasure our students, who are our Taradale Treasures!!

Student Purpose Statement

We have had another exciting start as we welcomed our students, parents and staff back to our Taradale Schoolhouse and to the beginning of our 2019 school term. It is always a pleasure to greet everyone after a break and to listen to the rhythm of our schoolhouse fall into place. The students said hello to their friends and then focused on their learning, remembering the first line of our Student Purpose Statement:

I come to Taradale School to learn.
It is my responsibility to learn.
I do not have the right to interrupt my own learning or the learning of others:

  • In the classroom,
  • On the playground,
  • In the lunchroom,
  • On the bus.

This is my purpose.
