Music

We believe that music is one of the essential, fundamental components of general education, as well as a means to improving it. Music requires active participation, involving the student to develop problem-solving, higher order thinking skills and creating a life-long learning experience. Music allows multi-cultural relationships to be explored, enabling students to share in the spirit of the people who created the works and their heritage.

We believe that students gain personal satisfaction, intrinsic motivation, and enjoyment from participation and believe that the music program should provide a structure for continuous growth and development for all students to pursue their individual interests and ability.

We believe that our school has an obligation to help students develop their musical potential and should provide an outlet for creativity, self-expression, coping with the subjective and maintaining a balanced perspective on life.

In the month of June, students involved in the music program have many exciting opportunities taking place.

Starting off with a trip to the orchestra, every student in the Traditional Band CTF classes are off to the beautiful Jack Singer Concert Hall to enjoy an Open Rehearsal with the Calgary Symphony Orchestra. Students will be treated to observing and possibly interacting with this professional group as they rehearse for their concert later that evening.

Following this excursion, students who are members of the Ted Harrison Concert Band will be preparing for our annual Ted Tour. Every year in the spring our Concert Band rehearses and performs an hour-long concert held at two of the elementary schools in the area. This year we will be performing at Taradale Elementary School in the morning followed by a performance in the afternoon at Manmeet Singh Bhullar School.

Another exciting musical performance for students is the Modern Band public concert. Staged as an end-of-term assignment, every student in the Modern Band option is asked to take part in a public performance to satisfy the requirements for the course. This year’s class has chosen the front foyer of the school as our venue location to perform a lunchtime concert for students who would like to watch and positively encourage our growing rock stars.

And finally, the choir is taking part in a very special opportunity this year. Our singers are headed downtown to the beautiful Calgary Board of Education Centre to perform O Canada to mark the beginning of a Board of Trustee’s meeting. Our choir of close to sixty students from all grade levels is very excited to travel downtown and take part in this unique event.
