Digital Citizenship

At Terry Fox School, we believe that technology can be a powerful tool to enhance and support the learning of each student.

Students have the opportunity to access and use technology to support their learning, and are also responsible to use technology in appropriate and ethical ways. To support this work, all students, staff and parents must follow established standards of appropriate and ethical use while using technology.

BYOD (Bring your own device)

We believe that students benefit from using technology to support learning, and that learning how to use technology appropriately is part of what school should teach.

Students may ask their supervising teacher for permission to use their device; otherwise, it should remain away for the day.

Devices may be used for academic purposes, during instructional time, at the discretion of the teacher, and provided that the student is following expectations of Digital Citizenship.

Digital Citizenship is an approach to using technology appropriately. This approach is taught in classrooms, modelled by teachers, and expected of all students. Students using personal devices at lunch, or before/after school, are still bound by the expectations of Digital Citizenship, and the Student Code of Conduct. Students may be asked to limit technology use for safety reasons, or to minimize disruption of the school environment.

The school will not be responsible for lost or stolen electronic items; such items are brought to school at the students’ own risk.

Digital Citizenship at the CBE

Digital citizenship is about using technology and participating in digital environments. It is key to helping our students learn to use available technology responsibly in the classroom and beyond. Our school has a Digital Citizenship Plan that is updated annually, addressing how we work to build a community where we live and work together as digital citizens.

Visit the CBE website to learn more about how we support students to develop online safety skills and be good digital citizens.
