Thorncliffe School Digital Citizenship Plan 2022-23

Long Term Goal 1:

Students will respectfully and responsibly create and manage a positive personal digital presence. 


Digital Self, Digital Safety


  • While using technology for learning, I understand that what I do online represents who I am.
  • I can login to my accounts independently and keep my password private, and I can reset my passwords when needed.
  • I can identify common tools and strategies that can be used to develop my personal identity, both on and offline.
  • I can use Google Apps and Iris as tools for learning at a grade-appropriate level.
  • I am digitally literate and can navigate grade-appropriate websites. 


  • Review acceptable use policies and related ARs with students.
  • Review and understand Thorncliffe School's Admirable Use Policy.
  • Incorporate lessons related to examining credible sources and potential bias of sources.
  • Teach students safe and responsible use of technology tools including using how to secure their personal account and password. 
  • Teach students how to access G-Suite for Education to find classwork and understand how to use the platform to complete and submit assignments.
  • Engage students in conversations and provide exemplars of appropriate use (i.e. Iris and Google Classroom)
  • Ensure students make password changes on a frequent basis.


Students will be provided with step-by-step visuals on how to log on to IRIS, Google Classroom, Google Meet and submit assignments.


Students are able to access appropriate websites and recognize that their actions represent a digital self 

Students can log in successfully and independently 

Students are able to upload artifacts and goals on IRIS 

Students will be able to update and manage their passwords for both log in and Google App use

Digital Self, Digital Learning, Digital Rights & Responsibilities


  • I can demonstrate responsibility for creating a positive digital presence, and demonstrate positive interactions when using digital technology.
  • I can distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate digital interactions and content. 
  • I can practice strategies for validating digital information. 
  • Gr. 5/6: I can use copyright and creative commons appropriately in various situations (applied to the works of others, applied to my own works).


    •  Lessons on creating positive on-line interactions. 
    • On-Line tutorials through Common Sense Media 
    • On-going conversations prior to research about valid websites and direct modeling of how to validate a website. (.gov, .edu, etc.)
    • Lessons on rating/evaluating websites. 
    • Review of digital tools available. 
    • Discussion around personal strengths for representing learning and what tool are available that support that strength. 
    • Lessons on plagiarism 
    • Direct modeling of how to use website information without plagiarizing. 
    • Direct modeling/teaching of how to select a diagram/photos off the website with correct usage rights (Gr. 5/6).
    • Teach online safety: highlight difference of interacting with someone online and in person

What is an Admirable Use Policy?

An admirable use policy positively describes the ways in which we would like to see students and teachers using technology for learning. The use of technology is an important part of learning at Thorncliffe School and all other
CBE schools. By using an electronic device, either school or personal property, students are agreeing to our Admirable Use of Technology Policy, as outlined below:

Do use our network to: 

  • Connect to other students and adults who share your passions and with whom you can learn.
  • Join with your teachers to find experts and other teachers from around the world.
  • Publish your best work in text and multimedia for a CBE-approved audience.
  • Explore your own creativity and passions, to ask questions and seek answers from online sources. 
  • Collaborate with others to change the world in meaningful, positive ways.
  • Meet your learning needs while protecting your own health and wellness.
  • Demonstrate your understanding of learning outcomes in creative and thoughtful ways.
  • Think critically and build information literacy skills.
  • Learn and practice digital citizenship and consider the thoughts and feelings of others.
  • Protect your privacy, safety and freedom of thought. Be responsible for protecting the rights of others as well.
  • Learn respectfully and responsibly.

Digital citizenship is about using technology and participating in digital environments. It is key to helping our students learn to use available technology responsibly in the classroom and beyond. Our school has a Digital Citizenship Plan that is updated annually, addressing how we work to build a community where we live and work together as digital citizens.
