Welcome to the Tom Baines learning community! Tom Baines and the Edgemont/Hamptons Community are "Partners Together" and this strength has created a school community that is strongly valued and successful in all aspects of its program. In our school every student has opportunity to feel successful. Our learning community is based on our collective mantra "Respect yourself, Respect others and Respect the school."
Our School Philosophy
- Every student needs to feel safe and secure in coming to school, and there is a stress on the responsibility of citizenship and positive participation in the school.
- Every student needs to feel successful, and this is possible in a program that emphasizes academics, life skills, physical education, and a full range of complementary courses.
Every student needs to have the opportunity to feel significant and be attached to some aspect of the school, so there is a wide range of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, including a full offering of school sports and clubs.
Tom Baines School was founded on the theme of ‘Partners Together.’ We are successful because all of us –students, staff, and parents...are working together to provide the best educational experiences for all students. We are proud to call ourselves the Boas and recognize Agnes as our school mascot and logo.
Who Was Tom Baines?
Tom Baines (1901-1991) was the curator of the Calgary Zoo from 1929-1964. He also was greatly involved with the Canadian Scouting Movement in Calgary. When Tom 'retired' from being the curator of the Calgary Zoo, he began to visit Calgary and district schools.
From 1968-1990 a million students were introduced to his "Gimmick bag" and pet snake Agnes on these visits. We are proud to carry the name of such an outstanding citizen. Mr. Baines' legacy sets the example of citizenship, service, and proficiency for all the students who are, or who will be, part of this school. We know the school will be a continuing reminder of his contributions to our community.
