| Dear Tom Baines Families,
Our school year is well underway and we are excited for a few upcoming events. 1) School Council - our first meeting is on Monday, September 19 at 7:00 pm in person at our Learning Commons. You are encouraged to attend in person, however there will also be an opportunity to join online using this Teams link. Click here to join the meeting 2) Meet the Teacher is on Thursday, September 22 from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm. Remember that families have assigned times to attend. Please only come during your assigned times as that will alleviate crowding and allow teachers to meet and greet with more parents.
6:00 - 6:30 pm - families with last names A-I 6:30 - 7:00 pm - families with last names J-O 7:00 - 7:30 pm - families with last names P-Z 3) There is no school for students on September 23 and 30. September 23 is a professional learning day for teachers and September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Teachers will be providing learning opportunities for students around this important day the week of September 26. We are looking forward to having you in the building and working alongside you this school year. Derek Siakaluk, Principal

| Dear Parents & Guardians,
It is with mixed emotions that I write this message. I am retiring from the Calgary Board of Education after a rewarding 42 year career. My last day will be June 30th, 2022. I have been the Principal at Tom Baines School since April 2009. I have truly enjoyed getting to know the many families, children and now young adults. I have been very fortunate to work with such supportive, generous and kind parents over the last 13 years. The students have been a joy to work with and get to know on a personal level. Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with me over the years. The Tom Baines staff are amazing and will continue to provide an outstanding learning experience for your children moving forward. I look forward to helping and supporting your new Principal, Mr. Derek Siakaluk with the transition.
Again thank you for all your support and understanding.

This has been a year like no other school year. Our staff and students have moved online back to in-person, back and forth many times this year. I believe it has been the most challenging year in decades. Parents, teachers and many students are wondering what they may have missed in their learning opportunities this year. I would suggest that we cannot “worry" about this however; we will look at ways to help close learning gaps and meeting students where they are at in their learning progression. This will be a challenge that we will address in September. We all hope that the next school year will be a better year, a safer year and a much happier year for everyone involved. Our hope for the students is to have a “near normal" summer with lots of outdoors time, time with friends and family and a reduction in screen time. We want everyone to stay safe and stay healthy over the summer. Please keep checking the school's website for any additional information regarding our start up on September 1st, 2021. We will be taking our direction from Alberta Education, Alberta Health Services and the Calgary Board of Education regarding what school start up will look like regarding Covid protocols and safety measures. All our best to the grade 9 students moving on to high School and those families moving away from our designated communities. We look forward to having all 840 students starting school on September 1st, 2021. We hope everyone has a wonderful and safe summer.

We
hope you had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to another fantastic
school year. We are looking forward to welcoming all 830 students to school on
Tuesday September 3rd. (see below) Students should arrive no earlier
than 8:00 and no later than 8:40 am. Each grade will have a designated meeting
spot to find their name on a class list. Again, this year Tom Baines school is
at capacity and will be capped at 830 students. Please note: we are not able to
make any class changes as our classes are very full and moving a child into or
out of a class will mean moving other students around as well. The teachers
have spent hours on creating well-balanced classes that will provide ALL students
with an excellent learning environment. Thank you for your understanding.
If
you are dropping off or picking up your child at school, we would ask that you
respect the signage and not enter the school parking lot during the peak hours
in the morning from 7:30- 8:45 am and 3:15 – 3:45 pm. Last year we underwent a
traffic study at Tom Baines School and we are awaiting final direction from CBE
and the City of Calgary. Until that time, we will continue with the original
drop off and pick up restrictions to Edgepark Blvd. If you feel that you need
to come into the school please feel free to park in the church parking lot just
north of the school.
On the first day of school (Sept 3, 2019) your student will only need to bring a backpack or bag, small notebook, pen or pencil
the first day of school. Students will receive a locker however, that may not
happen on the first day. If they have school supplies, please have them here
for the second day (Wednesday) of school. Cafeteria service with a limited menu
will start on Wednesday September 4th.
A reminder: grade 6
students MUST remain on the school property during lunch unless they are going
home for lunch and we would ask that you provide the school with a note. Grades
7, 8 & 9 students may go off the school campus at lunch with parent’s
permission. This is an arrangement between you and your child. The school does
not restrict students in grades 7, 8 & 9 to campus unless it is for
disciplinary reasons. Please discuss your arrangement with your child.
Here
is the information for the first week of school:
Tuesday
September 3rd – Grade 6 meet in the Gym, grade 7 Centre Court, grade 8

the school. Feel free to send additional lunch items and a drink. Students that

and City busses will be available.
For
those students staying for the afternoon, City busses will be available at
3:30.
Wednesday

Wednesday schedule form 8:45 AM – 1:50 PM. Busses will be available for pick up.

Congratulations to the following staff members who will be pursuing new opportunities at other CBE schools in the 2019-20 school year. We say farewell to teachers Mr. Bradley Brown, Mr. Adam Mailman and Ms. Maria Sarro as well as Ms. Tea Trnski our school registrar. The positive impact these staff members have had within our learning community has been immeasurable, and they will be sorely missed.
We extend our sincere thanks to Miss Stacy Kim, Mrs. Beth Novak and Mr. Paul Ingle; all whom held temporary positions this year at Tom Baines. Miss Kim, Mrs. Novak and Mr. Ingle were very active members of our learning community and we have been very fortunate to have them share their gifts with us.
All of the above mentioned staff members have contributed amazing gifts and talents to our community and will be greatly missed. | A few notes and reminders for this week:
- Year-end exams can only be written on the day
that they are designated for. We cannot accommodate the many requests to
write exams early or late due to family holidays or appointments. Thank you for
your understanding as these dates have been published and emailed home for the
past three weeks and posted on the school’s D2L calendar since the
beginning of the school year.
- Grade 9 parents will be receiving a special email on Monday June 11th with all the details of the Grade 9 Farewell and ticket distribution.
- Reminder that there is a lunch dismissal for the entire student body on Thursday, June 14, 2018. (11:52 a.m.)
- Some Tom Baines Students are organizing a bottle drive starting Monday June 11th until noon June 14th. The money raised will be donated to the “World Partnership Walk” on June 17th at Princess Island Park. This event is sponsored by the Aga Khan Foundation – Canada to help eliminate world poverty. You can drop off your bottles out front of the school (next to the garbage bins) any time after 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM each day except Thursday until 12:00 Noon. Any cash donations can be dropped off at the school office. Let’s support these students to eliminate world poverty.

Hello and welcome to our new website.
The change is part of a system-wide upgrade of all CBE school websites to a new standard. While any technology change takes some getting used to, we hope you'll appreciate the new features such as being able to view it on your smart phone, and being able to find anything on the site using the search tool at the top of the page.
I invite you to explore the pages and check back often for the most current information about Tom Baines School. You can also watch this space for periodic updates and announcements of school-wide importance. Thanks and come back soon!
Sincerely, Mr. Petrowitsch
