Assembly Celebration

This Thursday, we had our first, in person, whole school assembly. The Grade 3 and 4 students supported the success of the assembly in their work of leading the assembly through the MCs, and with the set up and behind the scenes work. The afternoon Kindergarten class sang, “Poof it's Spring” led by Mrs. C. Following this performance, a video of photos was shared showcasing the learning experiences so far this year highlighting the connection to others, community and exploration of nature. Next, we had the Grade 3 and 4 students perform an ensemble with various instruments. Some book trailers were shared highlighting favourite books and genres from the Grade 5/6 students. Finally, Mr. Lang read The Curious Garden by Peter Brown. The students did an amazing job as audience members and were celebratory in their applause. We are so proud of all of the students!

Chick Hatching

Kindergarten is so excited to be starting their chick hatching experience. We are learning facts about the hatching cycle. Some knowledge we have learned is that it takes 21 days for a chicken egg to hatch. Putting the eggs into the incubator keeps the eggs warm and safe until they hatch. We are using a calendar to keep track of the days until the big event. We are very motivated to document our observations and document this experience! Each day we come into the classroom to check on the eggs to look for changes. Frances shared, " We need to check on the eggs and see if there is enough water in the incubator." We are excited to hold and take care of the chicks when they finally hatch! Connor shared, " I can't wait to hold the little cuties!" Stay tuned…

Bus Routes A & B Combining - New Stop Times

Beginning on Monday, May 2 Bus A and Bus B will be combined. Stop locations have not changed, just stop times. Please check your MyCBE PowerSchool account for the changes that will affect you.

Miniature Houses

The Grade 3/4 Stevenson class is experimenting with building with a variety of materials! The project is to build a miniature cardboard house with doors and windows and add extra features like a patio, deck and garage. Students will also be incorporating their study of simple machines by including one of those in the build (e.g. a pulley, ramp, wedge etc.). The next step will be to add a vehicle that moves that students can pull into their garage!

Hats on for Mental Health - May 4

The students and staff at University School continually work towards improving our mental health and overall well being on a daily basis.

Please support University School in raising awareness of the importance of good mental health on May 4 by wearing a special hat to school. For more information please visit the Canadian Mental Health Association Website that has practical advice, and information to help us identify how we feel.

Perspective, Flight, and Being Active

In Mr. Laing’s and Ms. Baker’s grade 5 and 6 classes this past week the students were diving into the past in Social Studies, and have been examining the history of Canadian Confederation from different points of view and preparing for an in-class debate.

In Science, students have been researching flying animals, for the aerodynamics and flight unit and designing an informative poster relating their animals to aircraft using the principles of flight.

Some of the grade 5 & 6 Students also participated in a city-wide math contest put on by Mount Royal University as well as stretching their thinking with algebraic problems.

Students have also been getting active indoors and outside this week participating in post Earth Day clean up of our school grounds and collecting natural materials for an art sculpture inspired by Canadian artist, Shyne Dark. Students were also keeping physically active practicing for the upcoming lacrosse residency as well as learning karate skills from Ms. Blunt.
