Weekly Update

Dear Families,

It has been an incredibly positive two weeks at University School. I have felt very welcomed by staff, students and families!

As we are trying to spend as much time outside as possible please ensure that your student is dressed for the weather. Students are outside at minimum three times a day- recess, lunch break and gym. If your student needs mittens, hat, jacket or boots please let us know.

Special thanks to parents who let us know in why their students are away and willingness to get sniffles checked out .

Thank You
Thanks to all in our community for continuing to keep our school community healthy. With the recent rise in cases it is even more important that we continue to follow protocols:

  • Masking
  • Handwashing
  • Staying home with any symptoms
  • Physical distancing
  • We are now requesting that families remain outside when picking up or dropping off students. We will bring students up to the front doors and we always appreciate a phone call letting us know this is happening.

New lunch schedules
In order to cohort our classes as tightly as possible, we are moving to 3 separate staggered lunch breaks. No class will come into contact with any other class outside at recess or lunch breaks.

Grade 1/2   11:00am-11:45am

Grade 3/4   11:45am- 12:30pm

Grade 5/6   12:30pm- 1:15pm

School Council Meeting | Nov. 24, 6:00 PM
University School Council virtual meeting. This will be your opportunity to meet the school principal. Give feedback on school goals for the year and hear about plans for the school year and  how we are navigating learning. Please feel free to join us for all or part of this meeting. Click here to join the meeting

Student Progress
Many thanks to all the families that participated in Parent-Teacher conferences. It was terrific to “see” you and join you in talking about goals focussed on learning.  If your family was NOT able to attend conferences, please connect with your students’ teacher to set up a conference. Report cards do not go out until early February.

Learning Moments
Helpful questions beyond ‘What did you do in school today?’

This week, all students learned about perseverance and resilience. Ask your child: What story did you read to learn about these two words? What were some of the many ways Horten showed perseverance? What does resilience mean? How are we all showing perseverance and resilience during Covid

Safety

There are a few concerns about safety at University School that you can help to improve. There are a number of families dropping students off at the front entrance. Many times students are running across the road at parents’ direction, cars are doing U-turns or parking in the bus zone. Please take the time to make sure your student gets to school safely.

As well some students are arriving before 7:50 am. There is NO supervision available before 7:50 am. Please have your student arrive at 7:50 or shortly after. Classes do not start before 8:00am. A reminder that all CBE playgrounds are closed immediately before and after school to avoid non- cohorted gatherings. Please encourage your student to head straight home after school.

Google Classrooms
Each teacher has a google classroom that your student can access for review, homework or if they are home sick. If you are unsure of how to access the classroom, please email your students’ teacher.

Please ask you student how to log in and have a look!
