Security

All visitors and volunteers must sign-in at the office.

Signing-Out a Student

If you need to take a child from school during class time or lunchtime, it is important that the school office is informed so that we know where your child is. Please use the Sign-Out Book kept in the office for this purpose. If your child is a bus user, but will not be taking the bus home, please let our office staff know so that we do not hold up the bus while we account for your child. Parents/Guardians can phone in to the school office, send a note, or let us know of these arrangements when you come in to the office to sign out your child.

When you come in to the school to get your child, please remain at the office and our office staff will be happy to call your child to come and meet you. This will minimize disruptions in the class. It is important to note that children may NOT leave the school during the day without an adult (unless they go home for lunch). If you have made arrangements for your child to leave the school grounds with another adult at any time in the day, please send a note that specifies the name of the adult who will be signing out your child. The staff in the office will need to see this note when the child is being collected.

Playground Safety & Supervision

The University community and University School share the two amazing playground structures. University School provides supervision for fifteen (15) minutes before the morning bell rings. After school there is no supervision provided. When we dismiss at the end of the day students may either catch the bus, meet their waiting parents or are to walk home. Students who are accompanied by parents are welcome to stay and play at the park. In an effort to keeps students safe we are asking students that are to walk home to go straight home right school and obtain permission from your parents to return to the playground or return with your parents as the playground is unsupervised by University School staff after school. We thank you in advance for your support of this request.

Following lunch, our lunchroom personnel supervise students on the playground. Students are expected to dress appropriately to be outside for up to 30 minutes. Provisions are made for students to stay indoors during inclement weather. Our lunchroom supervisors are well-qualified individuals and most have training in first aid.

Custody Arrangements

If there are specific, court-ordered custody arrangements that limit the access of a parent/guardian to a child or to information pertaining to a child, you must make the school aware of that fact. We will require a photocopy of court documents to be placed in the student’s confidential file.

Locked Doors / Security

We require all visitors and late students to use the front door of the school and to check-in at the office upon arrival. Please do not go straight to your child’s class without first stopping at the office. We lock the playground doors while children are in school and open them briefly in the morning, at recess and lunchtime. This assists us in maintaining a safe environment for our students. Please respect this policy when visiting the school. As part of our security practices, all volunteers and visitors are asked to check in at the office and to wear a visitor/volunteer badge while in the school during the school day. You will receive this badge when you sign in at the office.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
