Health & Wellness at the CBE

At the CBE, we believe in a whole school approach to health and wellness. We call this our Comprehensive School Health (CSH) approach. CSH is about healthy eating, active living, supportive social environments and positive mental health. As a system, we focus on the following four areas: healthy eating; healthy relationships; physical activity; and positive mental health. Each school creates its own approach and goals for health and wellness.

Visit the CBE website to learn more about health and wellness in schools.

Activities for Spring Break

  1. Outdoor Activities: Children should have a minimum of 60-90 active minutes per day.  Try going for a nature walk, play at a neighbourhood park, go skating, take a toboggan to a nearby hill or if it’s cold try a scavenger hunt at the mall. There are many attractions in Calgary to visit (some charge admission) Public Library, Calgary Zoo, Calgary Science Centre, Heritage Park, swimming pools, recreation centres, outdoor parks and natural areas, etc.
  2. Reading: Get into a novel as a family and enjoy a shared reading experience.  Talk about the story, wonder, predict, and enjoy it together. Your can encourage your child/ren to read or look at picture books for 15-30 minutes each day.
  3. Journaling: Encourage your child/ren to doodle, draw and/or write for 15- 30 minutes each day.  It’s a great time to relax and also have them reflect about and share what’s meaningful to them about their day.
  4. Building, Exploring and Creating: Using objects from around the house support your child/ren’s creativity by encouraging building of forts, models, structures, lego, K’nex, train tracks etc.; exploring by researching an inquiry questions on line, by interview or in the library;  or being creative: craft projects like making snowflakes, cards, pictures, playdough, beads etc.
  5. Have family game time: Try playing card, dice or board games.  They are a great way to develop vocabulary, count, add and learn different rules, how to take turns, strategies for game play and how to win and lose in dignified ways.
