Dear Staff and Community Members of Varsity Acres School,
I am honoured to join this vibrant community and to continue the amazing work of teaching and learning at Varsity Acres School. I am originally from Ontario and moved to Calgary in 2008 to start my teaching career with the Calgary Board of Education. I am proud to call Calgary home and to be raising my family here. As an early French Immersion student myself, I understand the benefits and challenges of the French language in both my personal and professional capacities.
I've taught at various middle schools in the CBE and most recently have been the Assistant Principal at Bob Edwards, a 6-9 French Immersion school, since 2016. I am passionate about teaching, collaboration and creating the conditions for success for all students. Students bring an important voice to their classrooms and need opportunities and encouragement to participate meaningfully in their learning journey. When students, families and the school team work together in service of students, we can develop strong connections, skills and confidence in our young people so that they can achieve at school and in their community. I believe in making myself visible and available to the school community. Please feel free to contact me at brreilly@cbe.ab.ca or through the school office throughout the school year. As parents, you know your children well and your voice matters. It is a privilege to join the Varsity Acres team. I am excited to meet your children and the dedicated team of teachers, support staff, and parents who work together to create a positive school community of learning, belonging and fun. J'ai hâte de rencontrer tous les élèves, enseignants et familles à Varsity Acres! Sincerely yours, Brooke Reilly

| As the school year comes to an end, I would like to thank all of our students and families . There have been many challenges this year and each step of the way our families worked with all of us to make this a great year full of learning for our students . We so appreciate our families' generosity and support of their students—it is a pleasure to work with you as a team to help all of our students thrive. I would also like to acknowledge Varsity Acres School staff for their dedication and incredible work this year. Through all the challenges this year brought, teachers continued to welcome and care for students and work as a team to ensure our students had the best possible experience when they were with us at school. I am deeply thankful for this teaching team. I'd also like to thanks all the staff who support our school in different ways—our team in the office, our Facility Operator and cleaners, our Librarian and Education assistants and our lunch supervisor team who all care for our students and work to ensure they have a wonderful and safe place to learn. Thank you to everyone who contributes to make Varsity Acres a great place to learn and grow. Each year, we are grateful for the staff members who are dedicated to our school community. We are thankful for the time we get to learn from each other and understand that some of our members will be moving on to other assignments and school locations. All the best to our staff who are moving on to new adventures! Varsity Acres School looks forward to continuing our work in Literacy, Mathematics and Well-Being in the fall, and to collaborating with families to ensure student success. Wishing you a safe, relaxing summer, Meghan Morden, Principal Varsity Acres School |
| Dear Varsity Acres Families, I want to begin by wishing you a Happy New Year. We are looking forward to 2022 with your students— thank you so much for sharing them with us. I know that this year has started out in a different way than anticipated and I appreciate that sudden shifts are challenging for families. To that end, we will do everything we are able to communicate about changes to in-person learning and transportation as early as we are able. Please check your email frequently as this is how we will be communicating with families, and as always feel welcome to contact our office if you need more information.
We look forward to welcoming students to the school as we return to in-person learning on Monday, January 10, 2022.

| The school year is off to a great start, and it's hard to believe that we're nearly at the end of September already. Our staff team has worked together to create routines for students and to help students and staff establish relationships with friends, each other and with families. It is important that our students staff, and families feel welcome in our learning community to ensure a fresh positive start at such a challenging time in a child's life and we encourage families to reach out to their teachers or our school office if they need information about our learning community and how they might connect to it. We hosted Student Learning Conferences last week, and I hope you had an opportunity to connect with your child's teacher so you could share your child's strengths, interests and aspirations. The information you share in these conferences helps us get to know your children even better and enables us to design learning for them so that they feel safe, respected, welcomed and cared for. Please be sure to continue to connect your child's classroom teachers as needed so we are aware of how we can support your children both at school and at home. This coming week marks many important moments for Canada. We're recognizing Terry Fox's accomplishments in his bid to run across Canada. We're also recognizing Residential Schools and their influence on Canadian Indigenous people through Orange Shirt Day. This year, we will recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation for the first time. Students are asked to wear an orange shirt or something that is orange to help mark this important day and remind us that every child matters. In everything we do, we want to continue being and becoming a community that is safe, caring, respectful and welcoming for all. Teachers will continue the community-centered practice of class meeting as students discuss important issues, and strengthen the community connection they have built throughout the first few weeks of school. Thank you to our teachers and families for coming together to ensure that our students are cared for and engaged in important learning.

| It is hard to believe that there are just a few days left of our school year. We are so grateful to all of our families who have supported students to have a successful and safe school year despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you for taking care of our students and our team of teachers and staff this year! Teachers and the school leadership team have spent this month organizing classroom configurations for next year. We appreciate your trust in our professionalism as we create class groupings, taking into consideration multiple variables, that ensure an optimum learning environment for every child. Your child's teacher will send a welcome email on or just before August 31, 2021, so you will know where your child will line up and who will greet them on the first day of school. Thank you for your ongoing support for Varsity Acres School and its students this year—it has been a pleasure to work with this community as we ensure all of our students are set up to thrive. . Each school year brings changes in staffing as we add new staff members and say goodbye to others whose career choices take them in different directions. This year, we would like to congratulate Mme Guylaine McTague on her retirement and wish her all this best in this next chapter of her life. We would like to welcome Mme Kelley Ireland to Varsity Acres School as our new Physical Education specialist as M. Trevor moves into the classroom. Should there be any other staffing changes, we will update you in the fall when we return to school. We anticipate that the year will start with many of the same COVID-19 protocols in place. Students are familiar with them so adjusting in the fall will be easier this year. We will have more information about what protocols will remain Closer to the first day of school. We will communicate that with you as information becomes available. Our school office will be open until June 30, 2021 at 1:30pm and will re-open for email or phone inquiries on August 27, 2021 at 8:00am On behalf of the staff at Varsity Acres school, I would like to wish all of our families a safe, fun and relaxing summer. We look forward to seeing everyone again when we return to school on September 1, 2021. Have a wonderful break! Meghan Morden, Principal Varsity Acres School

| As we head into our winter break, I would like to extend a warm thank you to parents, students and staff for their kindness to each other and for working collaboratively to keep Varsity Acres School a safe and welcoming place to learn, despite the many challenges that the pandemic has presented. It has not been easy, however working together toward the common goal of helping our students thrive is a worthwhile endeavor, and I am so grateful for each of your contributions. It is an honor to be a part of this community. I continue to appreciate everyone's quick adaptation and continued commitment to new pandemic protocols. I'm thankful that learning has continued for our students whether it has been at school, through the online HUB environment or at home when students were ill or required to self-isolate. This is no small feat, and I would like to highlight the work of our facilites team, our office admin team, our cleaners and Facility Operator and our lunchroom team who work to ensure that our building is and organized a safe place for our students to learn and grow. The final week of school before break included some festive in-school activities including our Winter PJ sing-along on Microsoft teams and screenings of Storybook Theatre's Annie in some classrooms. On behalf of everyone at Varsity Acres school, I wish you a restful winter break and hope that you can take as much time as possible to recharge and enjoy yourselves. We look forward to re-connecting online with all of our students on January 4, 2021. All my best to all of you, Meghan Morden Principal
