Disciplinary Practices

Disciplinary actions will:

• Be corrective and supportive
• Reflect the range of interventions and responses including:
• Universal interventions
• Targeted classroom and school interventions
• Intensive individualized supports
• Include opportunities for students to learn and make amends
• Focus on improving behavior
• Help students be successful at school

• First Incident: student sits down with the adult in response to incident (teacher, supervisor, principal) to talk about the incident and review the discipline policy. Consequences and caring behaviours are determined by the adult and student.
• Second Incident: student, adult in response to the incident, and classroom teacher sit down and discuss the incident and review the discipline policy again. Consequence and caring behaviour are determined. Parents are contacted and
• informed of the behaviour and the consequence. Both student and parents are made aware of the next step.
• Third Incident: student, teacher, principal and parents meet and discuss consequences and caring behaviour. Parent, teacher and principal are involved in the follow-up and a final warning is issued.
• Fourth Incident: may be considered for suspension from class or school. Considerations are outlined in CBE Administrative Regulation 6006 – Progressive Student Discipline.
• Consequences (adult choice) may include loss of privileges, phone call to parents, community service, virtue assignment etc.
• Caring behaviour (student choice) may include note of apology or spoken apology, written reflection about the incident, project, community service, etc.

Playground Rights and Responsibilities

Everyone at VHS has the right to safety outside on the playground.

Included in this right, is the responsibility to help keep the playground safe for everyone.  Everyone at VHS has the responsibity to:

• Respect playground equipment
  • This means:
    • Not jumping off platforms, ladders or slides
    • Go down the slide feet first
    • Not climbing or hanging on the outside of equipment
    • Not using toys or balls on the playground equipment
    • Not playing tag games on the playground area (save that for the field)
    • Putting equipment away and returning equipment to the proper places
• Take turns when using playground equipment
  • Wait until one person is off the equipment before you get on
• Respect playground boundaries
  • Keep to the field area (don’t go past the baseball diamond) and the designated play areas
  • A supervisor must be able to hear and see you where you are playing
• Be safe on the compound
  • This means:
    • Make use of the painted games on the compound
    • Soccer balls and footballs are to be used in the field only
• Show care and concern for one another
  • Division II students (Grades 4, 5 and 6) can help to be aware of younger students, demonstrating role model behaviours and leadership
  • Be mindful of including others – watch the Buddy Bench for new friends!
• Be aware of possible dangers
  • This includes watching out for:
    • Small holes in the field
    • Cable lines
    • Icy conditions
      • Pylons are used to identify some dangers and indicate that a certain piece of equipment or area is closed
  • Report any danger to a supervisor in an orange vest
