We Have Come to the End of the 2022-23 School Year

Queridas familias,

It has been a year full of learning, growth, and achievement at WO Mitchell School. As we come to the end of the 2022-23 school year, I want to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks and congratulations to each of you.

You have shown unwavering dedication, perseverance, and a passion for learning that has been inspiring. Throughout this year, you have gained new skills, explored new topics, and bravely overcome challenges. I am proud of each of you and your individual and collective achievements.

Our school community has witnessed the power of bilingual education in Spanish. Students continue to show how proficiency in the Spanish language not only broadens their communication skills, but also allows them to understand and appreciate different cultures and perspectives. Students, you are ambassadors of multiculturalism and diversity, and I am excited about the positive impact you will have on the world.

I want to thank all the parents, guardians and families for your continued support throughout this year. Your active participation in the education of your children is essential and we value your collaboration and trust in our teaching team and in our school.

To our talented and dedicated teachers and school staff, I want to express my deepest gratitude. Your passion, commitment, and dedication have enriched the educational experience of our students and left a lasting mark on their lives. You are true role models and your tireless work is appreciated more than words can express.

As we say goodbye to this school year, I want to encourage you to reflect on all you have accomplished and to dream big for the future. The world is full of possibilities and I am sure that each of you has the potential to achieve great things and make a positive difference in society.

Always remember the importance of empathy, respect and compassion towards others. Keep curiosity and the desire to learn alive, as learning is a journey that never ends.

Finally, I want to wish you a wonderful and joyful summer. Rest, recharge and enjoy special moments with your loved ones. I look forward to seeing all of you next year, ready for new challenges and exciting opportunities for growth.

Principal Year End Message

Queridas familias,

It is hard to believe that the end of the school year is here.  For me, it has been a true pleasure to join the WO Mitchell community this year.  The 2021-22 school year has brought many memories for us to share.  Although we are still going through the Covid-19 pandemic, students were able to go on field trips, dance along with our artist in residence and skate through the inline skating residency that we held.  Our community, including students, teachers and families have demonstrated resiliency and flexibility, and this has enabled them to take full advantage to continue their learning.

As we head into the summer break, it is important to reflect on the many successes that our students had over the year.  Our students do great work and are extremely enthusiastic in their learning!  If any evidence is needed, all I need to do is to think about the last two weeks of school.  We held our Spring Showcase, where students had the opportunity to share the work they have completed in their music class.  In addition, we also had our first annual Maker Faire showcase, where students demonstrated their ingenuity with projects ranging from cooking experiments to homemade robotics.  It was a blast to see students interacting with each other as they shared their work.

This year, our school development plan focused on increasing students’ oral fluency in Spanish.  Over the year, teachers and students have worked towards this goal and it is exciting to hear the result in classrooms and hallways.

As we close this school year, I want to express my gratitude to all of you for trusting us with your most valuable possession – your children.  We have enjoyed being part of their lives and their learning journey.  We wish our grades 5 all the best in their new adventures, and can’t wait to see the rest of our students on September 1, 2022.
I wish you all an amazing summer!.

Gracias por todo,
Erick Noriega

End of School Year Message

We have heard countless times, from countless sources, that this year is a year that will be remembered.  We are sure that all of those sources are referring to the global pandemic, however for us, it will be because of the outstanding year at WO Mitchell School!

We served amazing students and amazing families.  Rich learning experiences were the hallmarks of each child's experiences.  We learned to do new things, and traditional things in new ways.  And, most importantly, we were together!

To our WOM parents, thank you for your unconditional support of our work, and for your commitments to our community's health.  To our School Council, thank you for your partnership in leading this amazing school.  To our students, thank you for your optimism, your excitement for learning, and your commitments to take care of each other during this most memorable year!

To our incredible staff…it is easy to be the administrative team of this school because of the people who work here.  Your dedication to excellence, to your students, and to our community inspire and elevate our spirits every day.  Only those who do the work can truly appreciate how intense your work has been this year, and from the bottom of our hearts, Thank You!

As we look to September, please remember:

  • The first day of school is Wednesday, September 1 (this is before the long weekend).
  • Kindergarten students will have staggered entry, with students having surnames A-L starting on September 1 and students having surnames M-Z starting on Thursday, September 2.
  • We await news from Alberta Health and the Alberta Ministry of Education as to how COVID-19 protocols may be adapted for the 2021-22 school year.  Until then, we have been asked to consider current organizational strategies/processes/protocols as our 'starting place'.
  • You will hear from your child's new teacher on Tuesday, August 31, through email, where they will introduce themselves to your family, and will outline first day procedures.

This year end message, to us, is not complete without acknowledging the horrible and evolving news that is emerging for our First Nation's communities, especially as it relates to the identification of unmarked graves at former residential school sites.  But in despair there is often hope. We believe that, if we truly listen to the perspective and paths forward being offered by our Indigenous People, and we take action as suggested by them, then we will find hope for better days for all!

And until those better days come, we wish you and yours a wonderful summer vacation.

Susan Coveyduck and Liz McManus, Administrative Team, WO Mitchell School
