Hello Parents and Families of West Springs School: 

The students seem delighted to see their friends and teachers after the holiday.  It was a solid week of engagement in learning as we settle back into the school routine. 

School Council Meeting

Please join us at the next School Council Meeting on Thursday, January 19, 2023 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. I, Lynn Sparks, am here as the Acting Principal for Mrs. Westgate as mentioned in my earlier letter. I would be happy to meet you and answer any questions you may have. 

Lottery and Kindergarten Registration 

As you know, we have begun the CBE Lottery process for all new students to West Springs School (WWS) as our school is filled to capacity.  This is effective immediately. If we can accommodate some of the new students, we will.  The new students will overflow to Olympic Heights School and will be placed on our West Springs School call-back list should space become available. 

In terms of the Lottery, we have been getting some calls from concerned parents regarding, the following:

“If my child is already enrolled in WWS, would I have to re-register them?”  

 The answer is “no” you do not need to re-register. 

Current Kindergarten to Grade 3 students automatically remain in the school.  However, any new students may not be able to be accommodated at West Springs School but will be called back should there be a space available.  Any students from out of area will be directed to their designated school. 

Kindergarten Registration begins on Monday, January 16.    Please ensure all Kindergarten registrations are submitted before February 14 at noon.  The Lottery draw will take place after that time. You can still register for Kindergarten after that time but you may in the overflow students.  Kindergarten students who are unsuccessful in the lottery process will be designated to Olympic Heights School and be placed on a call-back list should space become available at West Springs School. 

West Spring School’s Parents Parking in the West Ridge School’s Parking Lot 

Please do not use the WEST RIDGE SCHOOL’s PARKING LOT when picking up or dropping off your children.   I received a call from my lovely neighbour principal, Susan Coveyduck, about her staff being blocked into the parking lot.   Not only is this a problem for her staff, but it is unsafe for children and is against CBE policy to have children in the staff parking lots.    

Thank you for being good, considerate neighbours and please stay out of the West Ridge and West Springs Staff Parking lots. 

Ice and Snow Throwing by Students 

We have experienced a student being injured when other students were throwing ice and snow.  As you are aware, this is extremely dangerous.  The staff will be working with students to encourage positive, safe play in the snow and avoiding the ice.   Please speak to your children about the reasons we do not throw ice and snow. 

Report Cards  

West Springs School Student Report Cards are going to be live for parent and student viewing through My CBE on Monday January 30, 2023.   Please take the time to review report cards with your children through the lens of “What are their strengths” and “What are the areas of improvement?”   It is important to celebrate the child’s strengths first.   With any areas of improvement, ask the students, “What strategies can you use to improve?”  If you and your child are struggling to come up with successful strategies, please contact the teacher and/or Resource Teacher, Mr. Robert Choate to assist you.
