Thank you for joining us for conferences. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding while we navigated technological difficulties on Thursday evening. We are hopeful that all families were able to connect with their child(ren)’s teacher(s) and if not, that you have been able to or are planning to schedule a time to meet in the near future. Please be reminded that you can reach out to your classroom teachers at any time and that conferences are merely one formalized opportunity and they are not intended to be the only time. Book Fair

The book fair is now closed. Thank you to everyone that made a purchase. When purchasing from the book fair, a portion of funds are donated back to the school in the form of credits. We have enough credits to purchase 13 sets of decodable books that can supplement guided reading and literacy instruction in classes, along with some other things. Thank you for your contribution!

Food Collection

At West Springs School, we teach beyond the academics and include well-being through the development of a safe and caring community. This is rooted in the Pillars of Care – Care for self, Care for others and Care for this place (our community).

With the season of giving approaching, School Council is co-ordinating an opportunity to support student learning through care for others. Connaught School is an inner-city CBE school located in the downtown community of Connaught. They have many families who are refugees along with low-income families who are accessing the food banks, but with the higher demand for food bank, these families are not left with much to choose from. In several cases, some of the children go home to empty fridges and cupboards after school and the only meal they eat is the one provided at school.

West Springs School has adopted Connaught School as our sister school for a number of years now, including pre-pandemic. Please consider helping School Council and West Springs School Staff as we run a food drive to help support these families who are in need. Involving your children in these food drives is a great way to open a conversation for these real issues and get involved as we work together to show “care for others” and that we can make a really big difference. This is the focus we will take at the school when we talk about the "why" of this initiative.

We will be running this food drive from now until Dec 8th. Donation bins will be located inside the school in the main foyer.

Items needed are, but not limited to:

Rice, Oil, Tomato paste, sugar, cereal, Canned tuna, Diapers – all sizes/ages

Grocery gift cards are also accepted, if you want to go this route, consider stores like Superstore where families can buy household items, gas and food! These can be given directly to the amazing front office staff.

As always, we will also be taking the lost and found items down to our sister school as donations on Dec 8th. If you haven't yet, please send your child to claim their missing items.

Traffic Safety and Snow/ice Buildup

We have had an increase in reported traffic safety issues of a serious nature over the past few weeks. We are concerned by this trend and are continuing to work on strategies to help reduce these incidents. We are continuing to work on messaging for families around traffic safety and roles and responsibilities around the school and on city streets for drivers. We are also working with transportation services to determine a sustainable plan for our busses to be able to park safely for drop-off and pick-up so please be safe and stay tuned.

The field and walkways around the school are extremely icy and will likely deteriorate over the weekend with the thraw/freeze cycle we are in right now. Please be extra careful! Have a great weekend.
