COVID Accomodations - Online Learning


Hello Western Families: 

With the recent announcement from the Alberta Government, all our in-person classes will be moving online from Monday, November 30 to Friday, December 18. After winter break, online learning continues from Monday, January 4 to Friday, January 8. Our staff will be ready and prepared to support their students as we move online with interactive classes and lessons to finish the semester. 

The school will only be open for staff starting on Monday, November 30. If your student needs materials or resources from their teacher(s), an appointment must be made with their teacher or through the Main Office ahead of time. 

If your student does not have access to technology at home (laptop, tablet or desktop computer and internet access), please contact Ms. Hornby (mahornby@cbe.ab.ca). Priority will be given to Grade 12 students. Please keep in mind that our resources are limited.   

Unlike the provincial school lockdown in the spring of 2020, student grades are not fixed, meaning they will fluctuate based on student performance. There is an expectation that students will remain active in learning, attend all their virtual classes during scheduled times, and complete all assigned work to the best of their abilities. 

It is imperative that students continue to follow their regularly scheduled classes with our current school timetable (WCHS Bell Schedule) which will not change in online learning. Attendance is required and will be recorded by teachers based on students accessing D2L or virtual online meetings at their scheduled times. HUB classes will continue as scheduled. 

Our final exam schedule is currently under review. We understand the stress that online learning puts on our students, therefore: 

  • Diploma exams are optional, as announced by the Alberta Government. 
  • Students who plan on writing their diplomas will e-mail Mr. Wesley (gwesley@cbe.ab.ca) by December 7th.

It is very important that we all do our part in following the restrictions outlined by the Alberta Government. This is a change that will require us to rise to the challenge of defeating COVID-19 by being responsible for each other's health and safety.  We recognize you likely still have many questions.  Please talk to your child about this further as teachers share many details in the coming days.
