About Us
With a new name comes a new era, but the rich tradition of athletic
excellence at Western Canada High School remains unchanged. In 2014,
Western Canada High School embraced a new direction after retiring the
iconic Redmen logo. After an extensive and thorough dialogue with
Western alumni, staff, students and stakeholders, the new identity of
the High School was determined to be the Redhawks. It is a bird that
maintains the ferocity and strength of WCHS student athletes and
maintains the important colour scheme of our school community. A tough
decision it was to make the identity change, but one that will now be
embraced with open arms.
Redhawks student-athletes compete in all 11 Calgary Senior High
School Athletic Association (CSHSAA) approved sports, and consistently
experience tremendous success. Western Canada High School teams have
captured 260 city championships since 1930, and recently added five city
banners to the gym walls in 2013-14. Dedicated coaches, staff, parents
and volunteers work tirelessly alongside the student-athletes to ensure
that Western Canada High School remains not only a powerhouse in Calgary
but one that also competes consistently and at the highest level with
its provincial rivals. Athletically, academically and within the
extra-curricular realm, a student gets what they come for at Western.
Be a part of the new era. Be a part of the rich tradition. Come be a part of the ‘Hawks Nest!
History of the Athletics Program
Western Canada has a strong tradition of excellence and success in
athletics. Over the years Western has received numerous provincial and
city championships. Last year we broke a school record with ten city
championships. Our history of excellence is a product of the dedicated
efforts of student-athletes, parents, and coaches. We are also supported
by an amazing administration and student body.
We are proud to offer a well balanced athletic program for students
to get involved - as an athlete, trainer, minor official or manager, and
students are encourage to participate in all areas. Western competes
under the governing body of the Calgary Senior High School Athletic
Association (CSHSAA) and the Alberta Schools Athletic Association
(ASAA). Western competes in a total of 11 CSHSAA approved sports, the
maximum number possible in Calgary.
Athletics is an integral part of the total education process that
provides an opportunity for student-athletes to develop life skills and
grow into responsible citizens.
