Music IB available for Band Students at Western

Band 10 Cohort IB & Band 15AM Cohort IB (Day Block IB Band & Gr.10 Concert Band)

Prerequisite:  Enrollment in the Partial OR Full IB Programme and previous instrumental experience, described by one of the following:

  • At least one year of instrumental experience within the past three years through your junior high band program
  • Private lessons on a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument in at least one of the last three years
  • Students with string or piano experience are also able to enroll in this course

This unique course is designed for students who are enrolled in partial or full IB programming and would like to include Music IB as an arts component of the IB Diploma Programme. Students enrolled in partial or full IB who would like to enroll in the Band Program should absolutely consider this course for their programming.

*Band 10 Cohort IB is specifically designed to create course accessibility for all partial or full IB students with instrumental music experience who meet the prerequisite description above.  Adding an arts elective creates a well rounded course balance for students pursing the partial or full IB path. If you would like to fit Band 10 Cohort IB into your schedule and are not sure if you have room, please contact our IB coordinator Ms. Rivers who can support you with this enrollment.  

Students enrolled in the Band 10 Cohort IB day block class must also be enrolled in Band 15AM Cohort IB (Gr.10 Concert Band) for an additional 5-credits. Band 10 Cohort IB is the timetabled class that runs in the first semester only. Band 15AM Cohort IB is the co-requisite for students enrolled in Band 10 Cohort IB and runs for the full year in the AM block.

Band 15AM Cohort IB (Gr.10 Concert Band) meets on Tuesday and Friday during the AM block before school and runs for the Full Year for 5 credits.

Band 10 & Band 15AM (Day Block Band & Gr.10 Concert Band)

This course is an ensemble based music performance course. Students enrolled in the Band 10 day block class should also be enrolled in Band 15AM (Gr.10 Concert Band) for an additional 5-credits. Band 10 is a timetabled class which runs in the first semester only. Band 15AM is a co-requisite for students enrolled in Band 10 and runs for the full year in the AM block. If you are a full IB or partial IB student, it is important to note that your enrollment in the Band Program will support you in achieving your CAS outcomes each of your three years.  

Band 15AM (Gr.10 Concert Band) meets on Tuesday and Friday during the AM block before school and runs for the Full Year for 5 credits.

Band 10AM (Gr.10 Concert Band)

Band 10AM is for students who are in the IB program that cannot fit Band 10 into their timetable because of a full academic schedule and do not wish to pursue the IB course path for Band. Other students who are enrolled in a full academic schedule (no option courses) and cannot fit Band 10 into their day block timetable should also enroll in Band 10AM. All other students should be registered in Band 10 & Band 15AM. Band 10AM is an AM block class which runs for the full year. If you are a full IB or partial IB student, it is important to note that your enrollment in the Band Program will support you in achieving your CAS outcomes each of your three years.

Band 20 & Band 25AM (Day Block Band & Gr.11 Symphonic Band)

Prerequisite: Band 10/15AM or Band 10AM

Further development of technical skill and facility on the instrument is the focus of this ensemble based music performance course. Students enrolled in Band 20 during the day block timetable should also be enrolled in Band 25AM (Gr.11 Symphonic Band) for an additional 5-credits. Band 20 is the timetabled class which runs in the second semester only. Band 25AM is a co-requisite for students enrolled in Band 20 and runs for the full year in the AM and PM block.

Band 25AM (Gr.11 Symphonic Band) meets on Wednesday during the AM block before school and Friday during the PM block after school and runs for the Full Year for 5 credits.

Band 20AM (Gr.11 Symphonic Band)

Instrumental Jazz

Jazz Band 15/25/35

Co-requisite: Must be enrolled in Concert Band, Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble

Jazz Band is an auditioned performance-based instrumental ensemble open to grade 10-12 students. This ensemble focuses on the development of jazz repertoire and improvisation techniques. The group performs multiple times throughout the year for school-wide events, local concerts and festivals. 

Students rehearse Tuesday and Thursday in the PM block after school and the course runs for the Full Year for 5 credits.
