Doing homework results in higher grades and a more solid understanding of the concepts taught in class. The time and amount of homework increases with the student’s grade level. Students are required to complete some assignments at home. Homework includes assigned work, as well as unassigned study and review.

The following areas should serve as guidelines for your weekly homework plan: 

1. Work not finished 
2. Work missed due to absenteeism 
3. Long term assignments 
4. Organization of notes, assignments 
5. Review of each day’s work 
6. Study for tests and examinations

Recommended minimum homework times (formal or informal homework – this could include reading): 

• Grade 7 - 30 minutes daily 
• Grade 8 - 45 minutes daily 
• Grade 9 - 60 minutes daily

It is beneficial for students to have a regular time and place for doing homework; this is a positive habit to develop. Parents are encouraged to check notes and assignments on a regular basis and to ensure that homework is completed. Students should keep track of their homework, either by using an agenda or other organizer. 

Parents and teachers should routinely verify its contents and communicate with each other if there is any concern. Parents should encourage the development of good study habits by checking their child’s agenda book. 

Reading 

It is recommended that students spend a minimum of 30 minutes daily on recreational reading. Some of this reading may be done at school. A student should have homework each school day (assigned or unassigned). 

Students’ Homework Responsibilities 

1. Homework is the responsibility of the student. 
2. Record assignments in the student’s agenda book or other organizer. 
3. Students should ensure that required materials are taken home. 
4. The student should complete homework by the required due date. 
5. Completed homework should be returned to school when due and handed in. 
6. Students should allocate a time and place for homework, free from distractions.
7. When a student misses a class, it is his/her responsibility to complete the work assigned (find a study partner and ask your partner to record all homework assignments and to pick up an extra copy for you OR check in online). If necessary, arrange for someone to pick up the materials for you. If you are having trouble getting a study partner, please talk to your teacher

Parents’ Responsibilities 

1. Parents should demonstrate an interest in their child’s work and monitor progress. 
2. Parents should ensure that students have a time and place for homework that is free from distractions. 
3. Parents are urged to attend information evenings and parent conferences
4. Parents should regularly help their child and review their child’s homework. Please do not hesitate to contact the teacher to discuss any concerns. 

Teachers’ Responsibilities 

1. Teachers should assign homework in accordance with the homework policy guidelines. 
2. Teachers will try to be clear on homework assignments, making sure students have prerequisite skills. 
3. Teachers should assess homework and/or provide appropriate comments as time permits. 
4. Teachers should review homework in class and discuss any problems or questions students may have. 
5. Teachers will contact parents if students are not fulfilling their homework responsibilities.
