| Staffing Update Please see the introduction letter from our new Assistant Principal Ms. Sasha below.
Hello Alex Munro Students and Families!
My name is Sasha Gardiner-Hadford and I am excited to introduce myself as the new assistant principal of Alex Munro School. I look forward to meeting all of you and working alongside the community beginning on Monday, October 4.
I have been an educator with the Calgary Board of Education for over twenty years, with the majority of my teaching experience in K-6 positions as well as resource and literacy intervention. For the past three years I have been fortunate to work as a system literacy specialist at the CBE's Education Centre. My work included supporting literacy professional learning for teachers, creating resources, and working with schools to improve reading and writing achievement.
When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with my husband, son (grade 12) and daughter (grade 8). I also enjoy reading, skiing, walking, listening to podcasts, and I discovered my love of stand-up paddle boarding this summer!
I believe that students are at the centre of all we do and that relationship building is vital to the success of our students both academically and socially. I am excited to meet and work with all of you at Alex Munro School.
See you soon!
Sasha Gardiner-Hadford
Huge thanks to Ms. Kaley who has provided organization and school start up leadership over the past month in the role of Acting Assistant Principal. Ms. Kaley will re-join her grade ¾ class beginning October 4. Also many thanks to Ms. Ng who has been our temporary teacher in Ms. Kaley's grade ¾ class from the beginning of this school year. In honour of this memorable Canadian we as members of the Alex Munro Schoolhouse ran many laps. Considering our track to be approximately 500 metres our school ran 794 laps! An equivalent of 397 000 m (397 km). The class who ran the farthest ran 64 000 m (64 km = 128 laps). The class who ran the fewest ran 9500 m (9.5 km = 19 laps). K's ran- 27 000 m (27 km = 54 laps). Gr 1/2's ran- 85 500 m (85.5 km = 171 laps). Gr 3/4's ran- 127 500 m (127.5 km = 255 laps). Gr 5/6's ran- 157 000 m (157 km = 314 laps) Terry Fox ran the equivalent of 84 laps a day for 143 days in a row (a marathon a day)! Donations are used to purchase learning resources, support on and off-site learning activities, fine arts and athletic activities and much more. Thank-you for your generous donations and for AMPA who support our school in so many ways. The next AMPA meeting is Monday, October 18 at 6:00 PM. All are welcome. After School While school staff ensure the safe dismissal of all students, we remind all families that when school ends at 3:44 PM, there is no ongoing outside supervision from teachers. A reminder that there is not teacher supervision of the playground before or after school. Students using the playground at this time are under the supervision of a parents or caregiver. Return from Lunch A few students from Alex Munro go home for lunch. We ask these students to remain at home for at least 25 minutes so that when they return, their cohort of students will be outside. When students come back too early, their class is not yet outside. Thank-you. Emergency Food Community agencies provide emergency food here at Alex Munro. We ask that families talk with their students about when they need emergency food. Thanks for your help with this. Alex Dental Bus We are pleased that the Alex Dental Bus staff will provide a virtual presentation for students in grades 1, 2 and 6 on Monday, September 20 regarding dental health and hygiene. After this presentation, students in these grades will receive a consent form for dental screening. For those students in grades 1, 2 and 6 with parent consent, the dental bus staff will provide dental health screening in early October (currently booked for October 4, 5, 6). Federal Election Polling Station A note to families that the Alex Munro gymnasium will be used as a polling station for the federal election on Monday, September 20 from 7:30 AM – 7:30 PM. Voters will enter and leave through gym doors on the north side of the school, and while it will not disrupt student entry, you may want to avoid that area on September 20. Terry Fox Run On Thursday, September 23, students will participate in the Terry during their daily gym time. Student Drop Off and Parking Lot A reminder that there is no student drop off or pick up in the staff parking lot, unless utilizing the identified parking space for people with disabilities. Vehicle traffic in that space is unsafe for students and families. When walking, we encourage families to use the fence entrances rather than travel through the parking lot. Our message to students will be to choose alternate walking routes to avoid the parking lot.
