Security

We take safety and security seriously. It is important that we maintain a safe and caring community so that learning can take place.

Visitors & Volunteers

Our school is a closed campus. All visitors (student or adult) must report to the school office upon arrival to request permission from an administrator to be in the building and to sign in the Visitor Binder. (AR 1029 - Operation of Schools - Visitors to schools during school hours are subject to guidelines or directions issued by the principal concerning their presence and conduct.) All are required to be a student in good standing and have informed their mentor and school administration before inviting any guest to any Alternative High School activity.

Graduates of Alternative High School are welcome to visit the school outside of instructional time that is pre-arranged with a staff member. The most appropriate times would be after school or DGM. Students that have been withdrawn from Alternative High School will not be considered for visitation privileges until a full semester has passed.

Student Identification Cards (ID)

All students will be provided an ID card which must be carried at all times while in the school and on school property. ID cards must be visible at all times. They are required for the library, examinations and may be required at other school functions. Students must show their ID card to any staff member or school resource officer upon request, and must comply with this request in the interest of safety and security.

Note: Student ID may also be required by Calgary Transit to access their services.

Lost or Stolen ID Card

If an ID card is lost or stolen, students are responsible to pick-up a replacement at the office for a cost of $5.00.

Accidents

The details of any accident are to be reported immediately, either to a teacher or to the Main Office for appropriate documentation and/or communication.

Custody

Please make sure the school is aware of any specific legal orders pertaining to students on a yearly basis. If there are any changes throughout the year, please inform school administration.

Student Searches

In the event that school safety and security is a concern administration has the right to complete searches of student lockers, student property or personal belongings at any time.

School Resource Officer

The role of the Resource Officer is to provide guidance and act as a legal resource for teachers, students, parents/guardians and the community at large. Part of this role is to encourage communication and greater understanding among young people and the Calgary Police Service.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
