Monday Message - June 5

Dear Andrew Sibbald Families,

We hope you have had a wonderful weekend! It’s another busy and exciting week ahead at Sibbald. Our Grade Two students are off to the Zoo and our Grade Five & Six student patrols are off to Heritage Park to celebrate their year-long commitment to this act of service at our school. Thank you to all of the awesome patrols we had this year and to our teacher supervisors who have worked to schedule and supervise students throughout the year.

Grade Three Hatches Chicks!

Our Grade Three students were overjoyed to see the hatching of chicks in their classroom on Friday. This learning is a part of their life cycles Science curriculum and we are grateful that Ms. Braun and Ms. Swan have taken up this learning opportunity for students. The chicks will head back to Nanny McCluckins after their visit in Grade Three!

Grades 1-6 Sports Day & Pancake Breakfast

Thank you to Ms. Mitchell, Ms. Swan and Ms. Hayes for organizing our Sibbald Summer Games and Sports Day to take place during the week of June 12-16th. Staff and students look forward to a special pancake breakfast hosted by the Batter Boys on June 16th for Grades 1-6. We are grateful to the Andrew Sibbald Parent Association for covering the cost of this event so all Grades 1-6 students and staff can participate. Parents, more information about this will be emailed to you by your child’s teacher.

Professional Learning Day – Friday, June 9th

As a staff, we look forward to our final day of professional learning together which will focus around continuing to reflect on student evidence and learning data within mathematics, literacy (specifically reading instruction) and well-being from the current school year. Mr. Newman and I are incredibly proud of the staff for their engagement in professional learning this year, including uplifting our new K-3 New Curriculum in meaningful ways. Our professional learning communities held on Friday afternoons, along with our PD Days have supported our intended outcomes this year for both student learning and professional development. As we look ahead to next year and more new curriculum rollout, we are grateful to be able to make thoughtful decisions, and continue to work together in support of our students.

19th Annual Big Brave Event Wraps Up!

Congrats to all of our participants who either colored, cut or shaved their hair for the Big Brave event on Friday, May 26th. We would like to extend a thank you to all the community members, sponsors and Kids Cancer Care representatives who were able to come and join us. We are so moved by the generosity of the community around this event as well as the hard work of our students and their efforts put forth fundraising. We heard about lemonade stands, babysitting, doing chores and phoning family and friends to earn donations for The Big Brave. The total for this year was almost $75 000! Parents, guardians and family members, thank you for your support! And lastly, thank you to our staff who have inspired student participation, dedicated countless hours of organization, and for the passion that they brought to this legacy at Sibbald.

Monday Message - May 22

Dear Andrew Sibbald Families,

We hope that you have enjoyed some excellent time together over the long weekend!

We will continue to follow the air quality guidelines for outdoor activities outlined here, as we are impacted by the wildfires in Alberta. Thank you to our whole school community for being flexible and responsive, and demonstrating empathy to those deeply impacted by the wildfires, including evacuees.

2023-2024 Kindergarten Orientation – Thursday Evening

We look forward to welcoming parents and children to our 'Welcome to Kindergarten' evening on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. inside our school gym. We will share information about kindergarten programming in the Calgary Board of Education and at Andrew Sibbald School and do a tour of the kindergarten classroom. Each family will also receive an envelope with valuable information included.

Big Brave Event – Friday Morning

Andrew Sibbald School Community – Wow! You are amazing. Well over half of our student population is participating in the 19th annual Big Brave Event and working to demonstrate their commitment to kids and families impacted by cancer. It has been inspiring to see the work that students, families, and community members are taking up to bring their brave this year! Thank you to Ms. Hatchette, Miss Craik, Mrs. Drever and Mr. Newman for leading the charge and organizing this event for our school community. And we wish to extend our sincerest thank you to you and your families for your support, as well as the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta. We are so excited for this event which will take place on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. inside our gym. If you have not already, please check out the website here. Be ready to get inspired!

Congrats to Sibbald Students for Participation in the Mount Royal Math Contest

We are so proud of all our Grades 4-6 students who chose to participate in this year's Mount Royal Math Contest. Several of our students were honored last week for having made the top 25% of student scores from across the city. Way to represent, Sibbald students!

A Message from ASPA - Bottle Drive Fundraiser on Wednesday, May 24th

The bottle drive is this Wednesday! Parents are invited to bring donations to the school when they are dropping off and picking up their children. The staff parking lot will not be available for parking or drive-through use, during school hours. A table for collection will be at the main front doors before 8 am and again before 2:40pm. Then, from 3:30pm to 6pm, the Skip the Depot truck will be in the parking lot. At this time, anyone is welcome to drop their bottles off: parents, grandparents, friends, and the greater community. Let's make this a success and help the students in their goal of building the Gaga Ball Pit.

Thanks for your support,

Andrew Sibbald Parent Association

Reminder - Supervision begins at 7:50 a.m.

Parents, just a gentle reminder that student supervision and entry into the school begins at 7:50. We've noticed students coming to the playground quite early in the morning unsupervised to play. Please know we cannot be responsible for student safety prior to 7:50 and if students come to play before school, they must be supervised by a parent or guardian. Thank you for your understanding.

Update & Thank You - Student Fundraising Efforts for Outdoor Gaga Ball Pit

Thank you to all the students and parents who have helped support the Gr. 6 Gaga Ball Committee's fundraising efforts. It was truly appreciated. The students have successfully raised $1 500 dollars and met their contribution goal. We are also VERY grateful to the Parent Association and School Council for their support (both financial and encouragement) around this initiative. We will share out information around the building of the Gaga Ball Pit, as we work alongside CBE Facilities and timelines are established.

We are proud of the students for their perseverance and willingness to challenge their problem-solving skills. Thank you to the Div Two teachers and Mr. Newman for supporting this opportunity for our students. We are also proud of the students in their perseverance around their robotics learning that students are engaging in during their 'Maker Time.'

We celebrated Earth Day at Sibbald last week and look forward to the opportunities to engage in more land-based learning throughout the Spring. The Grade 1 classes are off to the Leighton Center on Tuesday this week, and will enjoy a day of learning together at this site.

In Gratitude

Parents, thank you to all of you who volunteered last week with swimming, the Fire Station and the other ways in which you supported our students and staff last week. Thank you, also, to our Parent Association members and School Council who organized the thoughtful staff appreciation gift around Earth Day! The reusable bags and seeds are awesome and remind us that Spring is coming.

Grade 6 students, with the support of some Student Voice members, are hosting their first fundraiser this week to raise funds for a Gaga Ball Pit. Their goal is to raise $1000.00 that will go towards the cost.

For $1.00, students can purchase 1 ticket to guess the number of candies in the candy jars displayed at the office. Tickets will be on sale all week at a scheduled time, and students can purchase as many tickets as they would like. The student or students with closest estimation win the candy jars.

Trickster Residency Reboot

We are looking forward to our rescheduled Trickster Residency during the week of May 8th – 12th. Just a reminder that there will be two evening performances on the Thursday evening (May 11th). We will email the details out this week. Thanks for supporting this experience for our students.

Monday Message – April 17th, 2023

Hope you have had a wonderful weekend & enjoyed some of the beautiful weather!

Minecraft Challenge Celebration

Last week we enjoyed seeing the learning that the Grade 4, 5 and 6 students have taken up in creating submissions for the CBE and City of Calgary's Minecraft Challenge. Thank you to the families in Gr. 4 who were able to come for the celebration of learning on Wednesday and thank you to Christopher Blais from the CBE and to Jason Cameron from the City of Calgary who visited our Gr. 5 and 6 students on Thursday. Students did an excellent job verbalizing intended learning outcomes & sharing their designs!

Offsite & Onsite Learning Opportunities this week @ Sibbald

Our Kindergarten students are off to the Parkland Fire Station, our Grades 1-3 students will be busy swimming, and our Grades 4-6 students will engage in a Netball residency here at school throughout the week. Thank you to our Parent Association for covering the cost of the Netball residency. We are all curious and excited to learn more about this sport.

Thank You for Your Feedback

Every year, CBE schools seek feedback from parents and guardians around school-based fees, unlike Central fees which include bussing, lunchroom and school supply fees, which are set by the System. We also appreciate gathering input around enhancements to school learning (residencies, field trips, working with experts) and how these rank as priorities. Please see the results of the survey posted on our website here

National Volunteer Appreciation Week!

National Volunteer Week is April 16-22. Thousands of volunteers work in CBE schools every year and play an important role in supporting students and schools. This year at Andrew Sibbald we have processed well over 110 volunteers and this number continues to grow. Please direct all questions about volunteering to Mrs. Dupuis in the office. We look forward to hosting a Volunteer Appreciation on June 2nd to honour all of those who have volunteered at Andrew Sibbald School this year. Stay tuned for more information. Thank You!

Save the Date: Sunday April 23rd 7:00 p.m. Virtual Parent Session

Parents, this week, you will receive an email invitation to register for a virtual presentation hosted by Paul Davis around 'Social Networking Safety.' Please see here to learn more about Paul and his work. Thank you to our School Council for organizing this event for parents and guardians.

Monday Message - April 3

Dear Andrew Sibbald Families,

We hope you all enjoyed your spring break. We are looking forward to welcoming students back this week!

As we continue our initial planning for the 2023-2024 school year ahead, thank you in advance for returning the slip of paper that will be sent home with your child this week around your child's registration at Andrew Sibbald for Grades 1-6. Student registration numbers help us plan for staffing and initial decisions around student learning.

Thank you, Community Helpers!

Our Kindergarten students have been learning about superheroes and the important roles that our very own superheroes within our community hold, including Calgary Fire Fighters and the Calgary Police Service. Thank you to Mrs. Hatchette for organizing Constable Steve Hill and his canine partner, Cali, to meet with the Monday/Wednesday class this week and the Tuesday/Thursday class on April 20th. Thank you, also, to the other members of the Calgary Fire Department who have visited with students this year. We appreciate your willingness to connect with our school community!

Parent Session – Tuesday, April 4th Understanding Anxiety

CBE and AHS' next session in the five-part series aimed at supporting families and caregivers in growing their understanding of child and youth well-being will be on Tuesday April 4, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. The session focuses on Understanding Anxiety.

This event is offered virtually at no-cost to participants. Everyone is welcome to participate, whether their child attends a CBE school.  Families and caregivers are key partners in a student's education. We also understand the shared role in supporting student well-being and how critically linked well-being is to student achievement.

Please see here for the link to join the session and for more information.

Monday Message - March 20

Monday Message: March 20th

Dear Andrew Sibbald Families,

Welcome Spring! We are all feeling grateful for the longer hours of daylight and warmer temperatures ahead. The staff and students have done an awesome job getting outside on our school field snowshoeing over the past few weeks and we are proud of even our youngest learners who have been successful in this activity.

Celebrating International Mathematics (Pi) Day

We enjoyed celebrating International Mathematics (Pi) Day here at Sibbald last week and appreciate all our Grades 4, 5 & 6 students who have signed up for the Calgary Elementary School Math Contest supported by Mount Royal University. The purpose of the contest is to encourage students to develop interest in mathematics and have fun. On April 26th, students who have chosen to sign up will complete 20 multiple choice questions. As noted by the organizers, this is not an exam but rather an opportunity for challenge and engagement. Thank you to Mr. Newman and our Grades 4, 5 and 6 teachers for supporting this at Andrew Sibbald School.

Thank You for the Donations

We have appreciated all the cardboard boxes that have come our way in preparation for the Trickster residency which has been rescheduled for the week of May 8th – 12th. We now have enough carboard. Thanks for your help with this!
