Resource Lists & Advice

Parents, we strongly urge you to read with your pre-school children every day – even if it is not in English. All children will learn better if they have been read to in any language before starting school. Once they start school, continue to read with them and start having them read to you.

Some Facts on Reading

  • A 10-year-old child that reads 40 minutes/day outside of school will encounter 2.3 million words that year. (Child One)
  • A 10-year-old child that reads 12 minutes/day (this is actually the average) outside of school will encounter 601,000 words that year. (Child Two)
  • A 10-year-old child that reads 90 seconds/day outside of school (a sad reality for many) will encounter 51,000 words that year. Child Three)
  •  By the time all three enter high school, the third child will be almost 7 million words behind child one.
