Good afternoon Balmoral families,

It is hard to believe Spring Break is already upon us! We hope all of our students and families have a wonderful week off and take some time to relax and recharge. The school office will be closed on March 24 at 1pm, and will re-open Monday, April 3 at 7:30am.

Social media reminder

Please remain vigilant about your child’s use of social media and chatting apps. We continue to see incidents where students are using apps such as discord, tik tok, and snapchat without enough monitoring at home, and sometimes late at night. There have been many studies that have found a strong link between social media use and anxiety, depression, loneliness, and self-harm in teenagers. This is a serious issue that we need parent support to remedy, as many of these incidents happen outside of school hours. Some effective strategies include limiting screen time, not allowing technology in bedrooms in the evenings, parental controls on apps, knowing your child’s passwords, and continuous monitoring of social media use. If you need more support with this issue, please reach out to Mr. Gordon.

Ramadan announcement

Ramadan Mubarak to our families celebrating this special month. We understand that some of our students might be fasting this month. Please let your child’s teacher know if your child is fasting so that we are aware. Students who are fasting can come to the Learning Commons at the following times for a quiet place to play games or study while the rest of the class is eating lunch.

Grades 5/6 – First half of lunch break

Grades 7/8/9 – Second half of lunch break

Students are expected to go outside for the other half of the lunch break to get some fresh air or play sports.

CBE Session on Mental Health

Dear Parents / Guardians,

The Calgary Board of Education is inviting all community members to join us for an inspiring evening of learning with experts in understanding anxiety. Anxiety is one of the most common mental health concerns affecting children and families across the lifespan. Parents and schools play an essential role in helping children manage their anxiety. This session will explore what anxiety and stress are, how to recognize it, and how to support resilience.

On April 4, the CBE’s Well-Being team will host a free online session where parents will be able to join and learn from to experts in the field of health promotion, ask questions and receive follow-up materials.

You are invited to join us at the virtual session from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 pm on Tuesday April 4^th.

Understanding Anxiety

Child and Youth Well-Being Series for Families and Caregivers Tuesday, April 4, 2023 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

CBE educators believe that parents and caregivers can inspire their kids to make healthy lifestyle choices and increase protective factors — in order to do so, they need the right tools and information. Since our understanding of student health and well-being is evolving, it is important for parents to stay up-to-date on the same information so everyone is supporting student success. This is the fourth session offered in a five-part Child and Youth Well-Being for Families and Caregivers learning series that is offered at no-cost to all Calgary Board of Education employees, families, and community members between December 2022 and May 2023.

The intention of the series is to advance student well-being by raising family and caregiver’s understanding of a variety of health-related topics. Each session focuses on reducing risk factors and increasing protective factors.

The last session will focus on Understanding Social Media (May 2, 2023). Communication about this last session will be distributed separately.

You are a key partner in your child’s education and student well-being is critically linked to student achievement.

Important information about out of area students

For the 2023-24 school year, Balmoral School has a CLOSED enrolment status. This means we are at capacity with students from our designated attendance area, and cannot keep out-of-area students at Balmoral next year.

All out-of-area families will be contacted in the next week to discuss options for the next school year, which may include a transfer to your designated TLC or community school.

If you have any questions regarding the out-of-area process, please contact our school office.

CTF Project Junk Collection

Are you and your family doing some spring cleaning? Do you have a lot of junk at home and are trying to get rid of it? Well, your junk is our treasure! Rather than sending these items to a landfill, send them to school with your child (Drop off at the office OR in room 24). We want to give these materials another life through sculpture. Please do not bring recyclables, we are looking for manufactured objects (toys, kitchen tools, old tech etc.) that cannot be recycled. Teeny tiny and large materials are welcome.
