Security

Visitors & Volunteers

CBE elementary schools secure buildings while students are present. This helps us to ensure the safety of our children. When guests arrive we ask that they ring the exterior bell to be let into the school. We require all visitors to sign in at the office. Volunteers and visitors will be given a visitor tag to wear for their stay. All students arriving after the bell must sign in at the office. Likewise, students who are leaving early must be signed out by a parent or legal guardian.

Locking the doors in no way reflects a change in  the way we feel about our parents. Our parents are always welcome in our building.

Supervision

Teachers are on supervision from 8:15 - 8:30 AM daily.

There is no supervision before 8:15 AM or after school. Students enter through the doors by the playground when the bell rings at 8:30 AM.

Recess

We are incorporate a 15-minute recess time for students in the school day. In the past teachers provided break times called "Reboot". Reboot times were considered instructional times and were not intended to be unstructured play times. The addition of recess time acknowledges that play is important and that unstructured play helps improve student physical abilities and focus. Each grade team will determine the best time for recess for their students. These recess breaks will be supervised by staff members. Students should bring a healthy snack for recess.

Fire Drills

When a fire alarm sounds, all students must:

  • remain calm and silent
  • follow the direction of all staff without question;
  • exit the school orderly and quickly through the nearest safe exit;
  • join their class outside of the school - report to that teacher and remain with that group until you receive direction from the teacher.
  • students outside of their classrooms should exit the building through the nearest safe exit and report to your teacher, who will be assembled in the school field. Remain with your teacher until the signal sounds to call students back into the school.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
