Bob Edwards was opened in September 1970 and is one of four Calgary schools of similar architecture that has a combination of open and closed academic areas. The school’s mascot is the Eagle. This majestic bird is a symbol of strength, determination, dedication and fortitude.
The school was named after Bob Edwards, the owner, publisher and editor of the local newspaper, The Eye Opener. Bob Edwards was born in Scotland in 1864 and moved to Calgary in 1904. Many others considered his beliefs about politics and social reform as being ahead of his time. He used his newspaper as a way to share his wit and humour, and to push for social reform for the betterment of Calgary. While his views were often unpopular to some readers, he was respected for having the courage to speak his mind.
As Dr. Grant MacEwan said in a selection from his book, Eye Opener Bob, “Whatever sins may have been laid at his door, his heart was big, and his mind was clear and altogether he was a most fascinating part of early Alberta.”
Bob Edwards School is located in the community of Marlborough and is the designated French Immersion Program for students living east of Deerfoot Trail (northeast and sections of southeast Calgary). Approximately 14% of our students have a learning code. Our English as Second Language learners makes up 54% of the total school population. Many of our ELL students are new to Canada and have the added complexity of learning a second language, and if registered in the French Immersion program, there is further complexity in learning a third language.
- Our school development plan focuses on improving levels of student engagement in learning and supporting students around the development of improved literacy, math and well-being skills.
- We offer an excellent cafeteria menu and a quality intramural program during the lunch hour. We have a full complement of athletic programs/teams offered throughout the school year. Students can participate in an excellent Band and CTF program.
- Bob Edwards is a bus receiver school for students coming from the community of Cityscape who attend our regular English community program. All other students are not bus eligible and therefore use Calgary Transit or other means to come to school.
