Positive COVID-19 Notifications after June 30, 2021
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! We have all really missed our students and community and can’t wait to see you. I hope your family has had an enjoyable summer, and that your child(ren) are looking forward to a return to school, even though it will look quite different than before. For children’s social, emotional, and mental well-being, I know many of us believe students need to be back in classrooms with their teacher. This needs to be balanced with concerns parents may have about possible illness. Some of our families may not feel comfortable sending their kids back to in-person classes this fall. This can be a difficult and heart-wrenching decision. If your choice is on-line learning, please see information sent by email from CBE regarding ‘hub’ learning. You must register for this by Monday, August 24. If you sign-up for hub learning, your child also remains registered from Bowcroft, but their teacher may not be from our school. An updated CBE Re-Entry Plan and School specific plan template will be shared with families next week. I realize this is quite late, but both CBE and our staff have had to constantly revise plans over the summer as directives have changed. Wearing of masks, social distancing, and frequent hand washing and sanitizing will be part of our day.More information about Alberta’s school re-entry can be found here: https://www.alberta.ca/k-to-12-school-re-entry-2020-21-school-year.aspx. Further information is available on the CBE website.Parents, students, and school staff must review the self-screening questionnaire each day before entering the school. A copy of the questionnaire will be in your child’s Welcome Package.Despite these difficult times, our school’s focus will continue be on best practice in teaching and learning, with a strong emphasis on academic success.Class lists will be posted outside the main entrance beginning at noon on Friday, August 28. They will be there until school starts. If your child(ren) would benefit from knowing their classroom placement prior to September 1, feel free have a look.School begins on Tuesday, September 1 at 9:00 am. Teachers will meet their students outside near the playground at this time. Class lists will be available. The school will not be open before 9:00 am. We will have a staggered entry into the building.Pre-packaged breakfast items will be available for students in classrooms each morning. All of our Education Assistants will be available to help our Kindergarten and grade 1/2 students transition to their classroom. Our Assistant Principal and I will also be helping our youngest students. We will take good care of them. Our Kindergarten teachers will also meet students and their families outside near the playground. Kindergarten students have a staggered entry on Tuesday and Wednesday: Students with last names beginning with A-L should attend on the Tuesday, and students with last names beginning with M-Z should attend on the Wednesday. Full Kindergarten classes begin on Thursday, September 3. The following teachers are new to the school this year:Frau Neumann will be taking on a new half-time teaching position within the German Bilingual Program. Frau Neumann is fluent in French, German and Spanish, has worked at a number of CBE elementary schools, and was teaching at the high school level with the Calgary German Language School this year. We are very happy to have her join us at Bowcroft! She will be offering literacy support to several classes.I am in the process of hiring Herr Ochs, who will be teaching grade 1/2 in the German Bilingual program. This is the position previously held by Frau Ronellenfitsch, who remains on a health-related leave until 2021. Herr Ochs is from Germany, has also just graduated from the University of Calgary, and completed a practicum assignment with Herr Moeller at Bowcroft. Herr Ochs has a wonderful and gentle manner with children, which is understandable as he is raising a lovely young family of his own.I am in the process of hiring Frau Viljoen, who will be teaching grade 3/4 in the German Bilingual program. This is the position previously held by Frau Lohmann. Frau Viljoen has just graduated from the University of Calgary and completed two practicum assignments at Bowcroft, which was a natural fit given her German language skills. Frau Viljoen also has a degree in music with a specialization in playing the cello!Herzlich Willkommen to all of our new teachers!I am delighted to share that Ms. Farrell (grade 1/2 Community program) will be returning to the school this year. Ms. Farrell is originally from Newfoundland and has taught in both the Middle East and Alberta, before joining our staff last fall. She is an outstanding teacher and I am very happy she is staying at our school.Mr. Dhanraj (Indigenous Education Strategist) will also be returning to the school this year. We are the only school in NW Calgary to have a full-time Strategist to support our 50+ First Nations, Metis & Inuit (FNMI) students. We are glad you remain with us Mr. D!Ms. Land is leaving Bowcroft School as she was successful in achieving the position of Learning Leader - Elementary Behaviour with the Inclusive Education Team. This is a promotion for Ms. Land where she will be providing expertise and leadership to many CBE schools and teachers. Ms. Farrell will be taking on her teaching assignment. We wish Ms. Land all the best in her new role!I have also increased the full-time equivalency (FTE) for both Ms. Bonham and Frau/Ms. Ruhrmann so they are able to offer increased literacy and numeracy support to classes. Our school is fortunate to have been in the position to do so.Our first School Conferences will be held on Thursday, September 24 from 5 pm to 8 pm. Additional conferences will be held on Friday, September 25 from 8 am to 12 pm. Conference times may be booked through My CBE/PowerSchool. Please see the CBE website for details. https://cbe.ab.ca. Please take advantage of these times to meet your child(ren)’s teacher. If you need help booking a conference, please contact the office. Unfortunately we will not be hosting a Welcome Back BBQ this year. The staff of Bowcroft looks forward to saying hello to familiar faces and greeting new students and families. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or comments. I may be reached at email@example.com or 403.777.6020 extension 2123.
