The Running and Reading Club at Bowcroft School is now in its second year and going strong. Each week 30 to 40 students train for their big race day: May 28, 2017 when they will take part in the 5k race at the Calgary Marathon. This will be the second time our school will be taking part in this big event and we are ready to race.
Each Wednesday Bowcroft students gather in the gym straight after the end of their school day and start running for 10 - 25 minutes. Coach Mat always brings a good mix of music to run to and leads our running. Every week we have six to ten volunteers and teachers who motivate the students and look after them. After the running part students do various stretches and strength activities before we finish the workout part with one or two fun active games. By this time we all look forward to a healthy snack break which consists of fresh food, granola bars, cheese and fruit juice. Each week one of the coaches introduces a new motivational "word of the week". The final activity is the reading part where students read by themselves, with their coaches or other members of their coaching group. By 5:15pm we are ready to go home with a big smile on our face.
The highlight of the Reading and Running program is the actual race in which each student will run with one coach starting at the Calgary Stampede ground. It will take the students 25 - 40 minutes to complete the course and each finisher receives a medal, a finisher's t-shirt and many freebies at the finish line.
My lasting memory of last year's race were the proud faces of the students who had trained all year and then received a well earned shiny medal at the finish line. All students wore their medals to school the next day and many kept wearing them for the next days - some even for weeks.
I would strongly encourage you to come to the Stampede ground on May 28, 2017 at 1 pm for the start of the 5K race. The students will welcome all support and you will experience a day which you will remember for a long time. I myself will be taking part in the marathon race before I will join the Running and Reading race. We are looking forward to you cheering along the race.
