One of the most important ways parents/guardians and community members can make a meaningful difference for students is by participating on the school council. Under the Education Act, a school council is a collective association designed to advise the principal and the CBE Board of Trustees on matters related to the school. School councils have legislated advisory. They are different from Parent Societies & Associations, whose main function is to raise funds for the school. You can find more details in the CBE School Council Handbook.

School Council

Branton School Council

The Branton School Council exists for parents (or guardians), teachers, support staff, students, and community members to enhance student learning by fostering the well-being and effectiveness of the Branton School community. In keeping with the Education Act and the School Councils Regulation, our goals are to:

  • Represent the parent perspective by providing input to, and consulting with, the school principal and employees on issues of importance.  These include: the school philosophy, mission and vision, school discipline policies, school improvement plans, programs and directions, and budget allocations to meet student needs;
  • Stimulate continuous improvement through meaningful involvement by all members of the school community;
  • Support the school in its efforts to focus teachers' time and school resources on the essential tasks of teaching and learning

Meeting Dates/Schedule

  • A minimum of seven Council meetings are required each school year (September to June). Meetings are the last Tuesday of the month (pending school availability), in the Learning Commons. Time varies according to Council and Association business (both meetings are held on one night). Exact dates and times are found on the school Calendar page .

If any parent or student is interested in writing their MLAs for any education-related comments, please see the templates posted on the right hand side of this page. One is from the Alberta Teacher Association and was geared towards class size. The second was created independently and is geared towards general education issues. These templates were received as communication at January 2020 (Appendix 1) and April 2021 (Appendix 2) Council meetings, and are shared here for your use.
