Principal's Message

Principal's Winter Break Message

The last 9 months have shifted our work as a school community quite dramatically!  When we gathered before the start-up of school in September, we came to a realization as a community there would be much work ahead of us.  We planned our school entry, we strategized as to how deal with the pandemic, and made decisions about what would best fit student learning in both an in-person and online environment.
We have continued to have high expectations for our students in their learning, and they have and continue to meet those expectations to the best of their ability.  Our students have demonstrated resilience and excellent mastery in COVID protocols and have successfully lead the way in how to continue to achieve while learning in their new parameters.  At the same time, we all have managed to treat one another with compassion, understanding, and kindness.
As a school community, you have stayed committed to our school goals of continued student learning and well-being.  Everyone is to be commended for staying on course at Brentwood.  On behalf of myself and my admin team, I would like to thank all of our students, staff, and parents for their un-wavering commitment to keeping on track and doing whatever is necessary to keep our school functioning, working towards a productive year of learning, and maintaining or safety as much as possible.
I would like to also acknowledge some of the 'great things' that have happened at Brentwood, and will continue to take place as we work to stay the course…

Bravo to our Grade 2 classes for an excellent online assembly about 'responsibility.'  Students are taking head that it is important to take responsibility for all that they do in the world…..an important message for sure!  I am very much looking forward to our next virtual assembly put on by the Grade 5s in January.
Thank you to our 'virtual winter assembly' performers for sharing their musical talents with everyone.  The jokes and hat draw were a nice touch to top off some of the winter spirit that was truly needed!
Kudos to our 'Movember' participants for raising funds to help support men's mental health as some work through difficult times from the stressors that the COVID pandemic has put upon them.  Thanks goes to out parent council and others who joined in the cause to bring our fund raising total to $700!  These funds will be used to support men in our school community in a manner that can support their needs.
A huge shout-out to one of our 'on-hold' rental groups who usually rent out our main gym on Sundays to host their services – Horizon Church.  As an organization, they have once again stepped up to assist us in our community support causes by putting together 8 Christmas hampers for families in need during the holiday season.  We graciously thank them for their blessing, generosity, and plentiful donations of gifts, food, and clothing that will bring much needed help, joy, and perhaps happiness to some of our families who have experienced hard times over the last while and who continue to struggle into the winter break.
Last but certainly not least, our many thanks are extended to our School Council/Fund Raising Society for their continued support of staff and students at Brentwood.  Not only have they worked to support student learning through their latest financial support for purchasing many needed items at the school level and arranged for a wonderful meal for teachers during P/T conferences, they gave all of us a fun opportunity to 'win a gift basket' if you took the time to show off your latest winter attire.  What a wonderful way to take us into the New Year!!

Speaking of the New Year….come January 2021, you have been informed that our first week back will have everyone learning 'online.'  As stated in the system message you recently received, all students will be learning from home for at least the first week of school in 2021.  Of note, Brentwood online learning will commence on January 5 as January 4 is a non-instructional day for teachers (as previously planned in our yearly calendar).  To that end, I draw your attention to the online learning guidelines below….

During the timespan of online learning, the teacher in charge of your child's class expects that students will be engaged in learning, attend all virtual classes during scheduled times, and complete all assignments to the best of their ability.  It is important to stay in a routine.  Every teacher will have shared a daily online schedule with the following plans in mind:
Daily class will run 'similar' to your classroom taking into account the restrictions that come with online learning versus in-person learning
Students must check Google Classroom every day to view the schedule posted
Times will be provided for whole group and small group instruction
Planned programming that will support student learning will include:

Grades K-3
Raz Kids Reading
A focus on language and mathematics learning outcomes that strengthen the development of literacy and numeracy
The incorporation of science, social studies and wellness (with a focus on mental health) Regularly scheduled Google Classroom meetings
Suggested Phys. Ed. activities as per Ms. LevineSuggested Music activities as per Ms. Lau
An average of five hours of work per student per week

Grades 4-5
Raz Kids Reading
A focus on language and mathematics learning outcomes that strengthen the development of literacy and numeracy
The incorporation of science, social studies and wellness (with a focus on mental health) curriculum outcomes
Regularly scheduled Google Classroom meetings
Suggested Phys. Ed. activities as per Ms. Levine
Suggested Music activities as per Ms. Lau
An average of six to eight hours of work per student per week
Of utmost importance…please take the time to review your child's learning on a daily basis and be prepared to assist as a learning coach where appropriate.  Please note that 'some' teachers may be sending student materials home on Friday, December 18th as they may require students to use them during their time of online learning – and others may not.  It will be at teacher discretion to do this pending necessity of having materials on hand or not.

As we depart for the winter I break, I leave you with one final thought.  I ask you and your families to 'Be Smart' in how you gather and celebrate during the holidays…I am confident that Brentwood can follow the guidelines as set out by AHS and the provincial government …to help flatten the curve!!!  Stay safe – the best of the holiday season to all!
Mr. Michayluk, Principal
