Illness & Medical

Attendance Line 403-777-6130  ext. 1.

It is important that you call the school if your child is going to be absent or arriving late.

Illness

If your child is ill, please keep them at home. If your child becomes ill during the school day, we will contact you and you will be expected to arrange for your child to be picked up as soon as possible (within the hour).

COVID-19 - Trying to decide if your child should come to school...

AHS Protocols that describe whether or not a child should come to school are outlined on the following webpage https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/topics/Page16998.aspx. Please use the above link to AHS to support your decision.

*Please email the school at Brentwood@cbe.ab.ca to explain which process you have taken prior to your child returning to school.

Although your child may not be in school right now, know that we are thinking about them and how best to continue their learning. Every teacher has set up an online presence to support students who can’t be in their classrooms. There are a few things the child and their parents can do to ensure their teacher is aware of their online participation.

  • Check that they are connected to your classes in the online system their teacher is using (Google Classroom).
  • Email your child’s teacher to inform them of your absence and confirm that you can access the Google Classroom.

If your child is unable to participate due to illness, teachers will work with them when they return to school. Even if they’re not in class, know that teachers will continue to help them with their learning. Please make sure both the child and parents stay in contact with the teacher and if you have any other questions, call the school office.

Sometimes students feel anxious or upset when this sense of normal is interrupted. Please ensure you speak with a trusted person should you find your child’s personal habits of eating, sleeping change, or you feel anxious or worried about things. Listed below are resources available for your child and you to explore to help everyone feel better:

Communicable Diseases

Young students are susceptible to communicable diseases in the community. If your child becomes ill, for the protection of your child and that of schoolmates, keep him/her at home until treated and/or recovered. Under the Health Act some diseases require exclusion for specified periods of time. (e.g. measles, chicken pox, whooping cough, pink eye, lice etc.) Please follow the medical advice given by your doctor and inform the school of any illnesses.

Accidents & Injuries

In the event of an accident, several courses of action may be taken depending upon the seriousness of the incident.

  • Scrapes and scratches, or any injury that can be treated with ice and cleaning with soap and water and a band-aid will be dealt with at the school.
  • In the case of sprains, severe cuts, or contusions, home will be notified immediately to decide what actions should be taken.
  • In the case of open and or heavily bleeding wounds, broken bones, unconsciousness, etc. the school will call an ambulance and parents immediately.
  • Accident insurance is provided upon request and forms are sent home in September.

Allergies

We are committed to providing a safe environment that is inclusive for all children. A number of our students have a potentially life-threatening allergy to peanut and tree nuts. Parents of children with allergies must fill out appropriate forms (also available in the office) and ensure the school has the necessary medication on-hand should a reaction occur. We ask that parents who are sending in classroom treats, please avoid the noted products. Staff is trained annually in the administration of an Epipen.

Medication

Parents or guardians requesting school assistance with their child’s medical needs are required to complete the following forms.

Student Health Emergency Response Protocol Form

  • This form is to be used when there is a student health issue requiring attention. This includes when there is a request to administer medication.

Student Health Plan

This form is to be:

  • completed if a physical or medical condition may affect the student’s attendance at school
  • completed if medication is to be taken at school
  • reviewed and updated annually or sooner if there is a change in the student’s health concern or school registration.

Health Services

The Calgary Health Region supports our school community by providing nursing services one-half day per week. These services include:

  • Acting as a support and resource for students and families
  • Providing health information to students, teachers, and parents
  • Providing health screening (such as hearing and vision)
  • Acting as a resource about the common diseases of children
  • Providing immunizations

You can contact our Public Health Nurse by leaving a message at our school, or by contacting the Acadia Community Health Center at 403-944-7180.
