June Update

This month in music class, the Grade 1s and 2s have been learning about jazz music and practicing songs that involve scatting. They have created their own scat sentences and performed them for their classmates. We have also played some games that review note values.

Grade 3 & 4 have begun Recorder Karate. We are multitasking as we read music, apply the correct fingering to each note and focus on breathing and articulation all at the same time! Part of our class time is spent on indi-vidual or small group practice so that they can work on songs at their level and test to receive a belt (coloured elastic band) as they pass off songs on the Recorder Karate list.

Grades 5 and 6 have been learning about jazz as well. We have learned a little bit about its history and listened to different styles of jazz. Now we researching the life and accomplishments of various jazz artists and the stu-dents will present these to their classmates. Also involved in this research project is to choose a song per-formed by their artist and complete a listening log and response about the piece of music.

May Update

Students and teachers have been busily preparing for our upcoming Spring Concert, The Rhythm, on Wednesday, May 2. There will be an AM performance at 8:30 and an evening performance at 6 PM. I have been impressed with how dedicated and excited the stu-dents are towards their performance. They attend lunch hour rehearsals faithfully and give it their all. After the evening performance, we invite all families to visit your child’s class so they can teach you what they have been learning and you can try to find your rhythm! We look forward to seeing you there!
