Principal's Message

Welcome to Semester 2

Welcome to Semester 2. It is hard to believe we are already half way through the school year. As we begin February, we are very excited to welcome back some students who are returning from HUB learning.
At this point in the year, I thought I would update you on where we are in our work with students through our School Development Planning Process.
We are continuing to work towards our SDP goals through whole school Professional Development and grade team Professional Learning Communities.
In writing we are using the work of Adrienne Greer to enhance narrative writing strategies in all classrooms. Teachers are seeing a renewed interest from their students in writing. Students have opportunities to write for real authentic purposes, as well as, write for fun! We are continuing to engage in whole school writing activities where students share the same writing prompt. Teachers then bring the student work to a Professional Learning Community meeting and we look at the assessment criteria and calibrate our assessment practices and plan next steps for students.

Our school wellness goal is also going great. We have been working with our school Occupational Therapist and Physical Therapist in live, virtual sessions with the students. As well as, Professional Development with staff to build capacity to help students self-regulate their bodies and emotions.

Grade teams are currently in the planning stages of Exhibition. Each grade team is planning to have a virtual exhibition in late April or early May. The funds agreed upon at the last School Council and CHEES meeting will be going towards working virtually with artists, performers and movement specialists, as well as, providing much needed resources for the students to work with the Artist in Residence (virtually). As more details become available, I will keep you updated on the exciting opportunities we are going to be providing for the students as they learn through the arts.

As always, if you have any questions about the work we are undertaking at the school, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Warm regards,
Hilary Wright
Principal, Capitol Hill School
