Band Program

Concert Band 15/25/35 (5 credits each)

In this ensemble, students develop their musical leadership through the study and performance of music from several time periods and styles. This band is designed to challenge and broaden students’ understanding of instrumental repertoire and techniques involved in the performance of music in various styles. This ensemble is open to all students in Grades 10-12 who wish to be part of a musical ensemble with prior instrumental experience, or at the discretion of the teacher.

Students must provide, or rent, one of the following instruments to be involved in this ensemble: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Euphonium, Trombone, Tuba, String Bass, Percussion.

Concert Band rehearses outside of the regular timetable two times a week.

Instrumental Music & General Music - PVA Band (5 credits each)

PVA Band accepts intermediate and advanced Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion students. Students develop their skills, technique, and musical understanding as musicians in a group setting, work in chamber groups, as well as working on solo repertoire in weekly group lessons. PVA Band students are also eligible for our Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz band, and/or Full Orchestra program that collaborates with members from PVA Strings. PVA Musicians perform at festivals, concerts, and around the world on tour.

Jazz Band (by annual audition)

Jazz band is a place for students who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass or drums to perform popular music from the last 100 years! Students will have the opportunity to develop their reading and jazz skills, including studies in contemporary jazz styles and improvisation. This ensemble is in demand for many performances throughout the year!

Full Orchestra

Prerequisites: None
Full Orchestra is an opportunity for PVA Strings and PVA Band students to combine to explore orchestra repertoire from baroque and classical, to contemporary, movie scores, and video game music. Full orchestra has several performance opportunities throughout the year.

Strings Program

Beginner Strings - Instrumental Music 10 - Strings (5 credits)

Do you want to learn to play the violin, viola, cello, or bass? This course will start from the beginning, teaching music reading skills, how to play in a group, as well as the fundamentals of playing a string instrument. From there it won’t be long before we are making beautiful music together! We will explore all kinds of music from classical to contemporary and even some music from the silver screen. Beginner strings will have several performance opportunities throughout the year. Upon completion of this course, you may audition to join us in the PVA Strings Program, and/or join us in Full Orchestra. This course is scheduled two times a week in the extended timetable.

PVA Music

PVA Music comprises wind, percussion, string, and vocal music instruction. Each PVA student will take part in one class during the timetable every day of the year, as well as at least one extra-curricular ensemble.
