Digital Citizenship and Web Awareness

Digital Citizenship in our schools is about having the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to demonstrate responsible and respectful behaviour when using technology or participating in digital environments.

We are committed to preparing our students to thrive in the 21st century. Digital citizenship, with an emphasis on both safety and ethical behavior, is a key component of helping CBE students use the digital technologies available to their best advantage to reach their full potential with the CBE and beyond.

Chaparral School has a Digital Citizenship Plan in accordance with our Administrative Regulations 1062 - Responsible Use of Electronic Information Resources. Use of electronic resources requires students to act morally and ethically when using all digital resources within Chaparral School (Alberta Education ICT Curriculum and Administrative Regulations 1062 - Responsible Use of Electronic Information Resources ). Teachers and staff ensure that students understand their roles and responsibilities when using digitally networked resources and share in the supervision of all students while online (eg. – students who are working within their classroom learning environment on networked computers).

Students are welcome to bring their personal electronic devices to school as part of a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) or Personally Owned Devices (POD) framework. They should understand how a device works and how its use supports their learning.

There is no requirement for students to bring their own device. Students will have access to devices at the school needed to support their learning.

CBE users can access the CBE Get Connected Network with wireless enabled devices that use an Internet browser for connectivity. All devices are subject to approval by the school and teacher. Students must use their device appropriately and comply with Administrative Regulations 1062 - Responsible Use of Electronic Information Resources. Ultimately, the teacher is the manager of the learning environment and will decide whether the device is being used appropriately. 

Students are responsible for any devices they bring to school. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.

Admirable Use Policy

The use of technology is an integral part of learning at all CBE schools, as required by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Program of Studies.

Students are encouraged to use technology to:

•  Access, critically assess, and communicate information and understanding
• Seek alternative viewpoints
• Collaborate during inquiry
• Construct personal knowledge and meaning
• Demonstrate understandings
• Organize and manipulate data
• Interact with others

Students will use devices and/or our network to:

• Demonstrate understanding of learning outcomes in creative and thoughtful ways
• Learn how to communicate with others in authentic ways
• Share their learning with others, including parents
• Support students in just in time learning
• Think critically about their learning
• Search for rich and reliable sources of information and learn hot to cite their world
• Use our network to learn and practice digital etiquette in a compassionate manner
• Use our network to have fair access to an electronic society so that you are ready to participate
• fully in it when you graduate from our educational system
• Use our network in a manner that will support your constantly growing understanding of new digital
• technologies
• Learn how to learn anytime anywhere
• Use our network in a manner that protects your privacy, safety and freedom of thought. Be
• responsible for protecting the rights of others as well
• Use our network in a manner that protects your own health and wellness as the Internet is a fascinating place and so is the real world 

Activities that are inappropriate for students or staff in CBE schools:

• Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures
• Using obscene language
• Harassing, insulting, or attacking others
• Intentionally damaging computer equipment or the network
• Violating copyright laws
• Using other people’s folders, work, or files
• Allowing others to use your account
• Trespassing into other people’s folders, work, or files
• Intentionally destroying other people’s work
• Employing the CBE network for commercial purposes
• Using electronic media for plagiarizing

Intentionally wasting system technology on non-teacher-approved activities such as:

• Playing games
• Participating in non-teacher-directed “chat”
• Participating in online gambling or other gaming activities
• Downloading software or restricted files (e.g. Exe, Zip, mp3)
• Installing software on any school computer
• Excessive or inappropriate printing

Violation of the CBE Policy

Each situation is dealt with on an individual basis and breach of policy may result in:

• Restriction or loss of computer privileges;
• School based disciplinary consequences; and / or
• Police intervention and/or legal action
