Hello, CJM families! I hope you've had a restful spring break. Here are your learning updates:

  • Parents/guardians, please make sure you are checking your email for teacher communication. I will be phoning students this week to check in.
  • Our D2L classroom is now set up. Please make sure you familiarize yourself will all the links and content available. The login information is the same as the one you used to access TLC homework.
  • Academic lessons and tasks will begin on Monday, April 6. We will be assigning 5 hours per week with a focus on literacy and numeracy, however the grade 3 team will be making supplementary resources available if you would like to do additional learning in other subjects (such as social studies and science).

Hi, everyone! Hope you are safe and healthy at home. Please remember to pick up your belongings as per the schedule that was emailed out to you. Many bags were not picked up.

The CBE sent out a link this week with some ideas for Learning at Home. If you didn't get it, click here. There are also many resources that are shared on social media for learning at home, so check those out as well. The important thing is that you continue to engage in learning while you are away from the CJM building.

I will be posting updates as soon as I can. Keep checking back here on a regular basis for new information.

Aggie Days Field Trip | The Calgary Stampede has made the decision to cancel this year’s Aggie Days.

Parent Wellness Survey | We invite all our kindergarten to grade three families to fill out our Parent Wellness survey. At CJM, we are committed to our students’ wellbeing and know that their feedback and those of their families are important to understand and will help make our school a better place to grow and learn. 

This survey is for the parents of students in kindergarten, grade one, two and three to fill out. The students in those grades will continue to fill out their own survey over the coming months.

Learning Update:

  • We have new words this week. Remember to practice word sorts at home.
  • We reviewed addition strategies and we will be creating a visual journal page tomorrow to show what we learned. Practice 3 digit addition problems at home.
  • Field trip | We are attending Aggie Days on Thursday, April 2, after spring break and we need volunteers!! You will need a volunteer clearance. If you don't have one, getting one is super easy! Just come to the office with a form of photo ID.

  • Student-Led Conferences | We are looking forward to "being the teacher" and teaching you everything we have been learning! Remember to book your conference for Thursday, March 19.

Learning Update:

  • This week, we learned about another of the 6 writing traits: voice! We learned that good writers choose their words and sentences carefully to create a mood or tone to their writing. Voice in writing is writing with personality!
  • We continued learning about addition strategies in math. Ask me about break apart, adding on and modified traditional algorithm.
  • In science, we had a rock walk and found many different things around our school that are made with rocks and minerals. Ask me about some of the things in our house that are made from rocks and minerals.

  • Homework is due tomorrow. Please let Ms. Tang know via email if homework will be late, otherwise it will result in an infraction.
  • School council will continue selling chocolate lollipops for $2 tomorrow (last day!).

Learning update:

  • In creative thinking, we compared and contrasted the numbers 200 and 350.
  • For language arts, we practiced our word work and vocabulary by completing a foursquare task: define, picture, example/non-example, and sentence.
  • In math, we learned to use an open number line to add numbers. For this, we needed to be able to add 10s and 100s really well. Please continue to practice at home.

  • Pink shirt day tomorrow - wear a pink shirt to show your support for a safe and caring school community and stand against bullying!

Learning update:

  • We got our new word sorts for this week. Please practice at home and return the zippered bag of words to school daily.

Agenda:

  • Homework has been posted on D2L, due Friday. Reminder: Weekly homework is part of the TLC program.  It is the student's and parents' responsibility to make sure homework is completed BY THE STUDENT on time and handed into the teacher. Incomplete or missing homework will result in an infraction. If a student has received 3 infractions, the student and guardians must meet with the principal, Mrs. Bains.
  • Scholastic book orders are due Friday. Book orders can be paid for online or by cheque (no cash) and must include provincial GST.

Learning Update:

  • We continued our learning about global citizenship through our case studies about other children around the world. Ask me about our two case studies from Brazil.
  • We have an in-class field trip coming up next Wednesday, Feb 26 from 9am-12pm about rocks and minerals. We require 4-5 volunteers in order to run the workshop. Please email Ms. Tang if you are available and have volunteer clearance.

Learning Update:

  • We have learned another one of the 6 writing traits -- sentence fluency. Ask me about 6 different ways to start a sentence.
  • How does empathy and quality of life impact global citizenship? To find out how to answer that question, we started looking at case studies about children from other places and comparing their quality of life.

  • Homework due tomorrow.
  • No school Thursday, Friday and Monday.
  • Valentine's day: Tomorrow is the last day of school before Valentine's Day. If you would like to share Valentine's or treats, there will be time to distribute them at the end of the day but it will be a normal day -- no party. For a class list, check d2l.

  • We have been talking about global citizenship. We read a book called If the World Were a Village. We learned about how different people in the world live and what they have to go through every day.

Learning Update:

  • We continued writing our organized winter paragraphs.
  • We practiced 3 digit subtraction strategies. So far, we have learned to use open number lines, base 10 and subtraction by place value (steps).
  • We worked on "brain collages" in art. We selected images and words to represent who we are as learners.
  • We started doing word sorts to help support our spelling and understanding of word patterns.

  • Homework for January 20-24 has been posted on D2L. Due Friday.
  • We have gymnastics tomorrow. Wear appropriate clothing for safety.

  • For creative thinking, we brainstormed all of the things we could think of that reminded us of winter.
  • In writing, we learned about another one of the 6 traits of writing: organization. We learned that disorganized writing can leave readers confused. We practiced organizing our winter ideas into categories
  • For Thespian Thursday, we used what we learned about the rock cycle to create our own songs/raps and performed them
  • In math, we practiced using number lines to subtract and started to learn about another strategy: increments
  • We had gym and music

  • We read an article about the plane crash in Iran

  • We looked at "counting up" and "counting back" using an open number line strategy in subtraction

  • For Mindful Monday, we reflected on the zones of regulation
  • We continued reading Front Desk. We selected one part of the chapter that stood out to us and analyzed why it might be meaningful to the story.
  • We continued learning about subtraction strategies. Today we used counting backwards on an open number line to subtract
  • We learned about the 4 layers of the earth
  • We learned about multiple intelligences and the different ways we can be smart.

Learning Update:

  • We worked on a birthday book for a student in our class
  • We had a spelling assessment to show Ms. Tang what we knew about spelling rules
  • We drew crystals in art and used watercolor pencil to create vibrant crystals
  • We have new Circle Friday groups

  • Next week, we will be starting gymnastics. For your safety, please remember to remove jewelry such as long necklaces, long hair needs to be tied back, and TLC students should wear pants and remove their ties.

Learning Update:

  • For creative thinking, we used our five senses to describe a familiar setting
  • We started learning about different strategies for subtraction. Today we used base 10 to visualize subtraction.
  • We started a new novel study: Front Desk. It is a story about a girl from China who's family immigrated to America and they work at a hotel. In the story, the main character Mia asks her mother why they moved away. Students are encouraged to discuss with their families why they chose to live in Canada.
  • We did some improve for Thespian Thursday.

  • Today we practiced fraction word problems again, this one was a little more challenging but not impossible
  • We got to draw/ sketch the blueprints of a house in science and learned about the process of building a house
  • Curling is done for this week :) We had fun
  • At the end of the day we read the Wild Robot and it was very sad
  • In creative thinking we made a birthday page for Mrs. Dhesi
  • In language we wrote the 2nd and 3r paragraphs for our Holiday Expository writing
  • In music we did a self assessment and made a goal for ourselves

  • For creative thinking we responded to an article we read yesterday about how schools have evolved in Calgary 
  • Today we used your responses to our interview questions to compare to the quality of life we have here by jotting it down in our visual journals
  • We had a sharing circle in regards to a notice being sent home today
  • During math we learned how to do a fraction word problem in our math groups 
  • We read the Wild Robot and continued our visual journal pages

Learning Update:

  • Today we continued our work on fractions, we learned how fractions are representations of wholes and how to draw and write fractions- ask me to define a denominator
  • In language arts we continued expository writing and were expected to finish our introduction and our first body paragraph. We are writing about a holiday that we celebrate!
  • For science we read an article to build on our understanding of design and structures from last week. We read about the evolution of school design in our own city of Calgary.
  • We also had gym and music, in gym we have curling residency :)

Agenda:

  • Please return the gift exchange letter back to school tomorrow 
  • Please complete interview questions with your child for tomorrow :)
  • No homework this week, just continue from last week if incomplete

Learning Update

  • Today we continued our posters that we will be sharing with you at conferences about costs to travel to our structure cities
  • We also had French and continued our Ma Maison project
  • For language arts we read a short story and did a crossword and answered some questions to see where we sit in terms of comprehension
  • This afternoon we continued our building projects and completed our quality of life visual jouranl pages, we gave each factor 1-5 stars for its impact on quality of life

Agenda:

  • There will be half day for students on Thursday (dismissal will be at 12:00 pm) and no school on Friday for students due to conferences
  • If you haven't booked the conference, please do so :)
  • This will be the last week for homework for students. No homework next week or the last week unless there are things students need to get finished up from class

  • For creative thinking we made connections between the Wild Robot and building, materials and our structures
  • We also had French today and started our projects
  • In math we continued our math project where we continued to plan our trip by finding flights and hotels and adding and multiplying to find totals while staying within our budget 
  • For social studies we continued our research on quality of life in our structure cities
  • We also had book exchange

  • Today for creative thinking and Mindful Monday we were reflecting on last week
  • We also finished planning, received feedback for our structures
  • In French we learned about "ma maison"
  • In math we started planning our trips to the place where our structure is, it requires adding and subtracting and learning to use our money wisely
  • We also learned some borrowing strategies in math

  • Today we started planning our structure that we have been researching about to create a 3D model

  • Today in math we were measuring the perimeter of the smartboard, the door, Mrs. Dhesi's desk, and the carpet using meter sticks
  • For creative thinking we looked for relationships between measurement, time, addition and patterns

  • We also had gym and music
  • Today in science we found concepts from the curriculum and related them to the Wild Robot

  • We continued our looking at architecture for science

  • In science we did a detailed look at architecture for our chosen structures around the world
  • During math we did addition with regrouping to see where we are at with addition, and we did a super hard bonus question
  • We had book exchange
  • While we ate snack, we had a discussion about "How war impacts different people?"
  • In language arts we did partner reading where we read articles about veterans and all the sacrifices they have made

  • For creative thinking we had to explain protect, conserve, preserve and development
  • We also had gym and music

  • Today we went to the library to sign out books
  • This morning we had the opportunity to meet Mrs. Harder, our new Assistant Principal
  • We had a blue dot day because it was TOO COLD! We did cosmic yoga instead for Mindful Monday
  • In the afternoon we made reflection journals for our field trip on Oct 30
  • For French we sang C'est Halloween
  • We also read an article about why people get scared and love it or don't!

  • The NDP won for Skyview Calgary in our class vote 
  • Students worked on researching the history of their structures for science and further investigated how their structure is constructed to be safe, stable and strong 
  • In math we continued looking at the number 21 and played with it to change it and show it in different ways
  • Students had French today
  • We read an article about Youtubers with disabilities and had a discussion about it

Learning Update:

  • For creative thinking we wrote and drew about our understanding of digital citizenship and then did a sharing circle about our experiences
  • We had a practice lockdown this morning and it went really well
  • This morning we also did our evacuation walk to Colonel J Fred Scott School
  • In the afternoon we converted our 6 room poetry into real poems from our time spent at Prince's Island Park 
  • We also had gym and music

Learning Update:

  • Today we drew a picture of a bridge and used different mediums to do the background
  • We also did our art critique like we do on Fridays for creative thinking
  • For Word Work we learned two new strategies, ABC order and 3Times
  • We also did some finish up work from our WIP folders

Learning Update:

  • Today we did the SLA test, we had to write about "if you were the teacher for the day what would you do"
  • In the morning for creative thinking we had turned squares into different things
  • We had our very first french class with Mrs. Barr today 
  • We summarized and read articles about schools in the USA that do not have long enough lunches
  • The grade 3s continued reading the Wild Robot and event mapping

  • For teamwork Tuesday we tried to make robotic hands
  • In math we learned how to compare patterns
  • We did a writing to go with a "what's going on in this picture"
  • Today we had gym and music

  • Raz Kids is up and running, all students should be reading 20 min 3X a week

Learning Update:

  • Today we did algebraic patterns and learned different strategies to complete patterns
  • It was Thespian Thursday so we did some Reader's Theatre in our groups 
  • In the afternoon during science we talked and looked at different types of bridges, the students did visual journal pages that represented the four types of bridges 
  • We also had gym and music

Learning Update:

  • We talked about the positive and negative impacts of cell phones on students and children 
  • During math we conducted the MIPI test to see what we remember from grade 2
  • We continued reading the Wild Robot
  • We had a practice fire drill 
  • In the morning we used a strategy called annotating to close read an article and then talked about it 
  • For social studies we drew the seven continents and we talked bout the upcoming elections and the leaders of all the parties

Learning Update:

  • We went to the learning commons today to have our first orientation, we learned how to keep the library clean 
  • On iris we uploaded a writing and reading sample 
  • We read the Wild Robot, Roz saved a baby gosling and is figuring out how to take care of it
  • In math, we did increasing and decreasing number and picture patterns as well as the rules 
  • Today we learned about how the world turned into 7 continents

  • Volunteer forms came home today, we have another field trip on Oct 30th, please send back the forms if you can volunteer
  • Classroom walking distances notice sent home today as well

Learning Update:

  • Today we did some event mapping for a character called Ros from a book we are reading called "The Wild Robot"
  • We went outside for math to find patterns in nature 
  • During social studies we looked at a map of Canada and then we tried to navigate directions to a random house in Whitehorn from our school
  • We discussed with our groups about why it is important to have playgrounds to different communities
  • Our class has renamed itself Smart Mountain Valley 

Agenda:

  • Field trip forms and package with school forms have been sent back. Field trip forms MUST BE RETURNED BY WEDNESDAY! thank you for your support 
  • We need more parent volunteers for the field trip!
  • Our classes will be doing a community walk on Wednesday Sept 11th, 2019

Learning Update:

  • We sketched the school today by sitting on top of the hill - we used the "see, think, wonder and sketch (feel) Indigenous technique for journalling
  • We went on a long community walk around Whitehorn to the community center and learned about the event mapping journalling technique
  • We got to sit on rocks to do some of our event mapping
  • For Creative Thinking we renamed the colors in the rainbow 
  • We read the Wild Robot and did some acting
